101 things that you hate and love about the ssih site

101 Uses For is popular and let's hope it stays that way. Our second book is presently called 101 tips for self sufficiency; we will certainly dip into this section for ideas. So post away and let's try and get at least one thread up to 101.

101 things that you hate and love about the ssih site

Post: # 28772Post Andy Hamilton »

To make a balanced thread I thought I would put in things that you hate about ssish too.

1. I end up here when I should be doing something else. (love and hate)
2. There is a real community feel to it. (love)
3. I end up here when I should be doing something else. (love and hate)

Love...

The folks here.

Love....

The great threads. Always interesting, informative and some are amusing.

Hate....

not getting to the forum for a few days, only to see 65 new threads and answers to go through.
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

Love.....the friendliness of everyone on here

Love.......Having the answers to all my questions at my fingertips

Love & Hate.........not being able to tear myself away and the whole day going passed without getting anything done except posting threads!

Love & Hate........the fact that I thought I was quite 'up' on being greenish but actually finding out I know very little indeed & being overwhelmed when finding out about yet another new subject and that leads to something else, that then leads to something else, to something else etc and spending yet more time on here researching another topic!!

Hate......that little Debug code that pops up every now and then!!

Love - asking the panel

Love - being able to look back on previous discussions, searchable too!

Hate - the lack of a digest. But hey, I can always ask for my membership fee back, right?

Hate - my avatar. Time to change it.

Love - got to be the friendly, funny, knowledgeable people in the forum doesn't it? I really feel part of a community and it's great.

Love - the articles. Wealth of information there, great stuff.

Hate - well "hate" is a strong word but the lack of an index to articles is irritating. I kept thinking I'd read everything then I would come across an article I'd never seen before. And when I want to just look up the interesting article I saw a few days ago about handspinning organic alpaca wool or something I can never find it again.

On a related not, the home page could do with a tidy up. It looks very "busy" and everything is crammed onto one page. Instead of having a bunch of links to recipes there on the home page, there could be just one link called "recipes" which takes you to a different page with all the recipes on. Same with the "Tips", "Herbs", "In The Press" etc.

Good one Nev!

Love - the fact that SSish is sooooo friendly compared to the French forums that I go on who always have irritating, argumentative, purposefully-winding-people-up type of members.

Love - the fact that being a moderator on this forum means just deleting spam! No nasty arguments to moderate.

Hate - the fact I never have time to get through all the postings so I'm probably missing some interesting stuff!

Love and hate - often feel quite guilty about using plastic bags, even if I do reuse them many times.

Don't think I did not see that M3 shame on you. At least you are reusing them that is half the battle. Emma comes home with bags now and again and spends half an hour trying to justify them to me. There is always someone worse off mate.

Chickpea - There is a plan to redesign the site in a similar fashion to how you suggest just need to look at points 1 and 3 to see why it is taking a while. Will have to get back on it soon. here is a look see at what I have been doing - http://www.selfsufficientish.com/herbs.html - With regards to the forum it is much more difficult to change php than it is html. But there is a search button.

Hedgy - HAve asked for daily digest volunteers, will see what happens.

The debug mode thing chadspad - yep real pain in the aspect that is another thing on the list to sort out, although the fault lies with our web host really.

right another hate - some of the emails I get then don't even get a thank you when I have helped someone out. - it is the least they can do(Not on the forum BTW), I do get a lot of strange requests and problems and try to anwser them all. rant over

another hate is all the spam who is govenment minister for the internet? Something has to be done about this.

Love - Hearing stuff like nevs post

I don't hate anything about SSish - but I hate these blimming PCs that ALWAYS freeze up when it gets interesting! Which is, on average, after I've read three or four threads, and posted one or two contributions...

And I love the background colour - well, I have to, seeing as I spend a lot of time staring at a uniformly light green screen

Unfortunately, I spend so much time trying to tickle something out of these PCs that I don't have time left to get my own computer sorted. Despite Shirley and Dave's best efforts to get me on the way.

:love9:
The friendliness and enthusiasm of the people that post here
Being able to ask questions without feeling small
The community spirit

:evil2: Nothing leaps to mind. I'd say it's distracting but really it's my ineptitude if I can't get off my arse and do other other stuff.

Love - being able to flip over here when I am working and just need a break or a bit of social chit chat to clear my head.

Love - How at least once a day folks here make me laugh out loud. There are some brilliant buggers here, very quick, very dry and very funny. Just love that.

Love - learning about different ways things are done there (England, Scotland, France, Canada and wherever else) and how things are different and the same.

Love - talking about likeminded stuff and sharing our progress. Seriously, if I talked about compost or pigs or tyres or mudwalls with anyone over here... well, I just don't anymore.

Love - knowing there is somewhere to ask questions when i encounter a problem or want to try something new. There is heaps of knowledge here.

Definately agree with Mandy on the easy going nature of the site. It really is good value to just trust folks are smiling and there is no innuendo to try and navigate.

Not even going to utter that H word... it is just not applicable.

Hmm, define what you mean by "love".

Platonic? No, I might be passionate about Ish, but chaste has nothing to with it.

Religious? Ish as my deity? Tempting, if only for the mantras I could come up with, but while Andy has the hair I'm not quite sure that he's ready for guru status yet...

Sexual? I don't even want to go there!

Puppy? Well, my relationship with Ish has already been going on for rather too long, I'm definitely not young and my feelings about the site have not faded. On the flip side of the coin, it does encourage my immature side!

Familial? Hmm, getting closer. A natural affection between members of a group bound by common ancestry or blood. On the basis that we're all supposedly descended from 10 Adams and 18 Eves, then I'd say I have a lot of cousins here. But, not quite...

Friendship? Ah, here we go. Free to talk about anything, check. Caring, helping and honest, check. Being there for each other, check. Good times and bad, check. Common interests, check. Feeling relaxed, check. Sharing experiences, check. Respect, check.

Well Andy, looks like Ish fits the bill!

To quote Dennis Hopper in E-Ring, "Can't you just feel the love?"

PS I really must stop drinking barley wine.

PPS Okay, I now have one hate - I can't find a Group Hug emoticon. Either that or I really have been drinking too much... :drunken:
