Drought resistant veg

Post: # 33017Post glenniedragon »

I've decided to plan ahead for next year, there's no water supply up at the lottie so every drop has to be carried or collected. What crops could I grow that would survive another dry summer? something exotic and unusual would be good, or if there are any varieties of the traditional veg that have coped better. My marfona tatties were real disappointing and my red onions barely poked out of the soil.

Hi, I'm pretty sure cape gooseberries and tomatillos are ok but man/woman can't live on these alone!

Hi glennie, do you mulch?
I don't water my plot at all (other than watering in seedlings), but mulch very heavily <8 inches.

Veg that did well in spite of the heat year included dwarf beans, tomatoes, red beet, celeriac, parsnips, squash, cucumber (Marketmore), potatoes Amandine and Rocket, overwintering onions, overwintering spinach, broadies, lettuce, chicory, scorzonera. Marigolds.
Veg that didn't do so well: pole and runner beans, courgette, carrots, salsify, Pink Fir Apple potato. Nasturtiums!

Am going to grow lots of tomatillos next year and try aubergines outdoors, maybe with some shelter

Mulching features prominently in all the old organic textbooks - I reckon it's in for a resurgence!
