Turnips

Superbly, it looks like all my turnip seeds have taken!! Unfortunately, I didnt sow them as thinly as I thought and they are clumped closely together. Does anyone know if they will transplant well or whether I just have to pick out the weaker ones and throw? I hate doing that tho, the thought that it could be a potential veg and all that but Im not replanting hundreds of tiny plants in 35Ã‚Â° blistering heat for nothing!!

I'd prick out the weaker ones and give the stronger specimens more of a chance. If you've got a couple of strongish looking plants near to each other, then try transplanting those but I wouldn't bother with anything that is too spindly.

I had reasonable success earlier this year thinning the turnips I planted (a mini, quick growing variety - can't remember the name though)... although I ended up deciding that I'm really not that keen on the taste of turnips so I probably won't grow them again!

Im not keen on them either but its was the only thing left to grow this late on that I didnt have, so had to give it a shot. There has been other things that Ive never liked eating until I grew themself, so heres hoping I get a taste for them now!

I grew turnips this year and they all came up and close together. I did have to do some radical thinning but they soon plumped up.

They are delicious baked and drizzled with a little honey half an hour before taking them out of the oven.

I shall be sowing them very thinly next year.

I think I should start a turnips, swede, neeps debate here.... now who classes what as a turnip? In scotland a turnip is an english swede - we could be talking about two different vegetables here.....

To me a swede is the big purple and apricot flesh coloured veg. Turnips are the little purple and white veg.

Im in agreement with Shiney but just to confuse things, the turnips I have are not round they are longer, bit like a parsnip, and white.
