Hemp

Post: # 32494Post Andy Hamilton »

I have been looking into hemp recenlty and its other uses. It seems that everything can be made from the stuff underware, linen even houses!

I don't own any hemp products do you? And if so is it comfortable to wear or how good are the products? Smoking it aside.

I've got some hemp 'cotton' bags. They feel like normal cotton ones..

I've got a few hemp plants too, as discussed earlier. I'm waiting for them to go to seed. Then i'll cut them down. Any idea how many plants it takes to make a bag?!

I've been looking for a hemp shirt for a while; anyone know where I find this sort of thing? Can't find anything on the 'net. Plenty of T-shirts and the like, but I'd like an ordinary, button front, long sleeved, collared shirt. If anyone sees one please post a link.

Here's a shed load of places you can visit and peruse at your pleasure - not bought anything from any of the shops listed though - I just like to look at pretty things.

I came across a load being grown at an eco museum I visited yesterday. It doesn't half stink! (but not as bad as the billy goat I petted just before getting in the car to come home. Now I know what people are talking about when they say billies smell. :pale: )

I always thought hemp smelled rather nice...

i read somewhere that hemp was made illegal beacuse of big buisiness interests they were literall scared of its potential....instead of harnessing it as a useful resource they banned it outright because they had only just made huge investments into man made fibers.

a pair of jeans made with hemp will last a lifetime apparently

Andy told me it was illegal because it reverts to marijuana in 3 generations...

I always understood that there were different strains of hemp, in the same way that there are different varieties of potato, or bean, or tomato. The stuff grown for its fibre, or whatever, only has trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol in it; another strain has rather more.

I shall be at the local organic market tomorrow, where they sell hemp seeds; I might just buy some, and grow my own shirt.

see, was wondering whether i could make my own stuff from my own hemp...a mousemat like mentioned above would be good!

The hemp i have growing i don't think is marijuana...it would be silly if it was because the seeds came from bird seed. If it is then expect a raid on the nearest pet shop! I'm waiting for it to bud to be honest to find out, but i don't know what i'll do with it (well, if it turn out to be female and 'fertile' then i have a few plans). I'm just leaving it to see what happens really!

I've been very interested in growing it for biomass. In caithness we are short of combustibles. It produces more biomass per acre than any other crop. it can simply be chopped and compacted and burned. You need a license to grow it in the Uk which includes proving you have a contract to sell it to a fiber manufacturer or other. We'll maybe have to wait on that one.

Half of my wardrobe is hemp and it is far more durable than cotton. I find it very comfortable especially after it has been washed a few times.
