Hello from Ipswich

Post: # 32380Post dmwcarol »

Hi

I've just joined so thought I should post a hello message.

I'm really just getting started at the self sufficiency thing, although I've always picked brambles and elderberries and the like for turning into jams and chutneys.

We don't have a garden so haven't really grown more than a few herbs on the windowsill - but I have just arranged a meeting at the local allotments with a view to getting ourselves a little patch of land where we can grow real food for ourselves and am all enthusiastic about it.

I found these forums while looking for recipes for using up the plethora of elderberries that were left over after making wine and cordial this year and it looks like a really useful resource which is why I signed up. I hope you guys will have plenty of advice for making the most of the allotment once we get it.

Carol

Hi Carol

Pull up a chair, pour a glass of wine and welcome!

Welcome - as an ex-Essex girl, Ipswich feels like home! Hope the lack of water down there isn't too arduous when it comes to watering your new allotment!
Started one myself last year and agree that it is lots of hard work to get a new patch cleared, but worth it!

Congratulations on the allotment !

Start collecting carpet off skips is my advice. It works really well as a sort of instant mulch, starts to clear the ground anyway and keeps the bits you have dealt with clear of weeds till you're ready to plant into it.

Hi, I am a newbie as well, got my brambles - sorry lottie yesterday and collected the keys this morning, I am lucky I have borrowed an industrial strimmer and my Dad is going to attack them whilst I lounge around my caravan for the weekend - I love being Daddy's girl !! When I come back it will be dig dig dig, we will have to inspire each other when the going gets tough and then revel in our fabulous crops !!

Good Luck :thumbleft:

Sorry! I forgot to say - don't use foambacked carpet under any circumstances - the foam disintegrates and becomes a bigger problem than the weeds - woven backs only, but it doesn't matter what they're made of.

Hey, I used to work at Wherstead, that was until the bosses were caught cooking the books. Or to be fair, being a bit too optimistic.

I'm originally from Bury St Edmunds.
