DaisyDaisy says hellooooo

Post: # 31061Post DaisyDaisy »

I've been trying hard to be self sufficient for all the time I've had a home of my own, where I have a say in how it runs. However, this is always a challenge because of where I live (this is my first home with a garden, but this is rather small, and my working patterns mean an allotment is not practical, even if one were to become available). I grow some food, but not enough to survive on at the moment, but hope to increase this next season.

My biggest achievement (of which I am very pleased!) so far is a refund from the water company !!! This is because I am metered and have been using rain water for everything that I can (especially flushing the loo), and the rebate was enough to fund 2 more rain barrels - I'm already planning where to put the barrels funded by next year's refund!

In my attempt to be green (rather than self suffiicient) I have to admit to compromises (the worst I can think of are that I use a car because of where I live & how/where I work, I have a dishwasher to save my sanity, I travel by air) but always I try to balance this out one way or another.

I'm sure I'll get lots of ideas here on how to get more self sufficient !

Wow, DaisyDaisy, what a great reward for being green. I really need to get my finger out and get a water butt. Living in Aberdeenshire, we get more than our fair share of rain

Hi Daisydaisy

:welcomeish:

Water harvesting is on my list too - lots of rain at the wrong time... our well is LOW! Well done you for tackling the water company and getting a refund!

more on that refund....

Post: # 31102Post DaisyDaisy »

in case I'm mistaken for a super hero(ine)....

because I'm metered the water company took £10 a month from me. Then they told me it would be going up next year to £11 a month  and THEN 2 weeks later I got a cheque from them for the refund :?

It all happened without me lifting a finger (although I did lift rather a lot of buckets upstairs to the bathroom  )
