August Planting

Post: # 30621Post the.fee.fairy »

Right, i'm really rubbish at this seasonal planting thing, so can people tell me what's best to plant this month please?

I'm a vegetable girl who's not overly successful!

In the veg patch at the moment there's onions (when do these get dug up?) and squash (hmm...no idea what these are going to do) and runner beans. The onions are one end, the squash the other and the runner beans are round the outside (we've got a little fence supposedly to stop the dog running around on the veg).

So, what can i put in the middle? There's a space of about 3' by 4' that needs filling. We've already had potatoes, and i have beetroot elsewhere.

I've got a greenhouse i can start things in, and i have some polytunnels (don't know how big they are - they're the ones from poundland).

Suggestions please?

Anything with a short growing period... I'm still planting all sorts of stuff that should have gone out ages ago  , but also, and this on time, lamb's lettuce and radishes. Spring onions for overwintering might be an idea, later in the year then broad beans and winter lettuce, to be picked early next year.

Apparently there are some varieties of courgettes and peas which can be sown now....or so I read. Surely they would just die out in the cold?
Weeds make me mad.

I've just bought 6 growbags as they were reduced in price and yesterday I planted Pac Choi, Chinese Cabbage, Beets (Boltardy), Cabbages and French beans (not sure about the beans but we'll see  ) Last year, around this time I put in some globe carrots and beets and had lovely little bite sized ones with dinner in November, which was nice; going to put carrots in tomorrow and hope for the same again :dave:

I'm getting ready to put my Christmas spuds in an old waterbut (thanks to Freecycle) and an old dustbin too.
If G*d took the trouble to assemble the dust in the house... who am I to disturb it?
