Very recommendable: This morning's Radio 4 "On your farm":
This week Mark Holdstock goes in search of the good life as he meets Jane Fanner Hoskin and her family, who farm a narrow strip of land between the South Oxford Canal and the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire. The farm is run in a 1950s style, using vintage machinery and methods. The cows are milked by hand, their horse and cart are used for weddings and husband Vivian makes old-fashioned wheelbarrows. Son Tom helps out with the vegetable patch and daughter Alicia is a horse-whisperer. And they've got possibly England 's only floating farm shop.

I listeened to that one, very enjoyable. They live on a narrow boat on the Oxford canal, and their little farm shop is in one end. The husband said they were having difficulties being self-sufficient in oranges and toilet paper, which made me smile............ How hard they worked was what struck me.
