Books Agents and George orwell

Post: # 29081Post Andy Hamilton »

Decided to stay a bit quiet about this news as not to get anyones hopes up until we had something set in stone. However, as we have had a couple of interviews for magazines and such mentioning this I though it was about time to share some good news.

A few weeks ago I contacted a few literary agents in order for us to progress with Ssish and hopefully turn it into a book. We ended up sticking with one of them called AM Heath. If you look on this page you will see two familiar names and a mention of this site. Click on the names for a couple of photos. One of the things that impressed us with them was the fact that they deal with all of George Orwells work. (my signature at the moment is an Orwell quote as a doff of the cap to him)

At the moment we are putting together a book proposal and at the end of the month we will be going around pitching the idea to publishers. Now this is not to say that we will get a deal, but it does mean that we stand a much better chance than if we did not have an agent.

It also means that you could get your name in print if you wish to have some recognition if and when we do get published. I have set up in the 101 uses for an extra "did you know" section. The final book, as the proposal stands, will be peppered with little facts. Just a box with a fact in it to corespond with the items on that page. Stick your fact in that section and we will try and incorperate it in the book, it can be about anything to do with a ssish lifestyle. If we can, once it is published, as I imagine we could get some free copies I will make sure that they anyone mentioned will get a signed copy. - I am not sure how this world of publising works but I am guessing they give out books to the author.

So in short keep your fingers crossed.

That's all very exciting. Best of luck to both of you. Can I pre-order a dozen copies to give to all my friends as Christmas gifts? (That's right, I only have a dozen friends)

Brilliant

Chickpea, I think 12 good friends are worth a lot... I don't have that many - definitely not outside SSish! Can I order, say half a dozen for Christmas? And maybe we should have a German translation, too... Then I could order a few more!

lets get a publisher first folks

I agree on the goodfriends note! We are trying to keep the book affordable but it will be out of our hands by the time we get to that stage. Will push for a german translation though

Well done Andy, but where's this box you want us to fill in? I would have thought that'd be reason enough for us to start to produce digests of previous threads!

Publishers used to give authors a dozen copies free but it's a dying practice, these days you're more likely to get just one as a final proof. We can but hope!

Well we will see about the free copies, if it becomes a best seller then I am sure I could afford to give some out for free. I wonder what the practice is for contributers?

The box to fill in just the 101 uses for section, I have just amended it to say 101 uses for and did you know.

I hope it all comes through it would be great to do ssish for a living.

Good stuff mate!

Lots of luck, I hope it goes well. Try to get a publisher that has an arm in Aus so we see it over here!

Wow Andy, sounds great,well done,
My wee brother in law is in the music industry (at least 10 years now) and i know he gets to give out plenty of their new CD's to family and friends... gosh, when I think about the guest lists he's got us onto as well, ......whee hee! I would imagine in the book publishing world it would be similiar, but surely your agent would tell you all this? Sounds great anyway, rgds, Pam
