Sustainable House Day

G'Day All,

We have put our house down to b on the silt to be visited during sustainable house day here in Aus, in August. There is still plenty of work to do to tidy the place up and finish off the odd project. We bought ourselves a goat shed yesterday!

You bought a goat shed!!!! Does this mean you will be getting goats very soon??

Good on you to put your house on the list... it's a really good idea.

Yep, shirl,

The idea is to get two miniature miking goats. The new goat shed will replce the old "temporary" shook shed and house the two chooks. We will then get a second shed and attach it to the first then look for a goatie or two!

Am I right in thinking that this means you will get people coming around you house to look at what you have done? - Will the solar oven and esky slow cooker be show? Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick here.

Yes to both questions!

Hopefully I can generate some interest in people being more sustainable by showing them some of the stuff that I have done.

And what better to wear for the occasion than my self sufficientish T shirt!

Well, as usual, things didn't turn out as expected!

After a couple of weeks of warm and beautiful days it all came crashing down this week and today was cold, raining and windy

.

We got 10 visitors all up which is not earth shattering but a guy up in Kurrajong only got 6 so I suppose I shouldn't complain!

Anyway, had some good conversations, even if I did freeze my bum off.

Sorry about the weather - how typically British!

Look on the bright side - there were 10 people who were so interested even the bad weather didn't put them off. Now all you need is a Self Sufficientish cardi!

Woops - edited to say - just noticed it was your BUM that was freezing - so maybe you could persuade Luath to knit you some long johns with a SSish logo!

I wore my SS T-shirt but for most of the time i had a thick jacket over the top.

Yes it was good to talk with the hardy souls who did turn up, and all of the rainwater tanks are chockers!

Hey, Nev, just spotted this!

We went along to our local Sustainable house day last weekend. A bit disappointed to see only 7 houses on the list, and two of those were State (Housing Commission) houses which had been insulated and had thermal curtains fittes, Whoop-de-do.

Only one house completely off-grid, but it was worth the $30 just to see that one - the house was built from Rudnev panels, the kind they use to build cool stores, and they were lighting the house with led lights. He had thought up all sorts of cool ways to display and use the lights, like putting one led in each hole of a Parmesan cheese shaker, and suspending that from the ceiling.

Also saw a house where they are harnessing the energy from their well water to heat their house slab, and a very cool wind turbine.

Overall very inspirational!

Well, I guess at least here we don't have far to travel to see the houses either - I can't imagine driving all over Sydney to see them!

Good for you, putting yourself out there, hopefully one day our house will be good enough to do the same. This was the first year I had heard of it - how long has it been going?

It is my first year too! It used to be called Solar House Day and I think it has been going on for a while. They do give more info on the website.

I went to an EcoShow at Rosehill and met a fellow by the name of Rob Kemp, I put his website up in the Links area some time ago. After discussions with him I decided to give it a go.
