.....if I can overwinter a squash plant?
We got a lovely acorn squash in the veg box a couple of weeks ago. I cooked it and left the gubbins - seeds etc in the bowl for taking out to the compost. The following evening when we came to take it out there was a teeny sprout growing - I'm guessing it was already there but too small to notice when I prepped the veg.
Anyhoo, I potted it up and it is growing, slowly but determinedly, on my windowsill. If I put it somewhere cool but protected do you think it'll survive? The season is usually too short to get anything other than a couple of feeble specimens.
If it does I may just have cracked growing squash up here.
Does anyone know.....

It ought to be possible to overwinter the plant indoors. I've no idea how well it will do, or how big it will get. However, since you know the seeds are viable, save some of them to plant in the spring.

The answer to that one is try it and see. I start mine off on a windowsill early in the season so it could be possible.

Yes, I think that's the best plan, Zoe, it's still doing well, growing slowly but quite happily. I'll move it to another room which is much cooler soon - we're near the stage of lighting the boiler, so I think it will be too warm on the living room widowsill and I am slightly concerned, KL, that come spring we'll have to battle a triffid!

I don't see why not.
I always (without fail) start my squash far too early, then plant them out far too early, and they just sit there rather dejectedly sulking.
Then a couple of months later burst into life and rush about trying to take over the world.
Your plan of a frost free cool room sounds ideal, or you could take KL's suggestion and dry some of the remaining seed and try sowing them at the proper time.
EDIT:
Don't over water, keep it on the dry side and only water when the leaves start to flop, otherwise stem and root rot are almost guaranteed.

Unfortunately we threw away all the seeds - I just managed to whip out this little blighter before they were unceremoniously dumped by OH. Can't grumble too much - it's taken me 30+ years to get get him to tidy up!
