Anyone any ideas what this is?

I don't think it's edible... I'm certainly not trying the berries anyway! But am curious as to what this is - found it growing on the edge of my garden. Anyone know?

Looks like privet to me, although I've never grown it.
Dead common hedging shrub that has white flowers in late spring and black berries like your photo in autumn, which I believe are poisonous.

Certainly a privet, most probably European privet (Ligustrum vulgare). Native to southern Europe, not sure if this includes Britain; berries are definitely poisonous and flowers can trigger hay fever like allergy. It is the compounds in the perfume rather than the pollen in this case.

Privets are usually treated as invasives (weeds) in Australia although this species has only turned up on the NSW Northern Tablelands so far.

Yes, looks like a privet. I've never seen one fruit before as they're almost always trimmed. I bet it looked beautiful in flower.

I would have said laurel or privet - either way for the birds rather than for us I think.
