Post: # 28624Post puheen »

hello all
i am growing tomatoes in a polytunnel and some of the developing toms have a brown patch on the bottom of them which seems to progress upwards over time
i cant seem to find out what it is in my books and would be glad of any suggestions as to what it maybe and what course of action i should take

are any of the leaves or stem affected? if they are it might be blight but if not, could be blossom end rot. Affects usually just the fruit and is an effect of irregular watering.

Yes, I think it is caused by irregular watering - but so many tomato problems such as the green collar/shoulder which mine have suffered from, seem to stem from high temperatures/big fluctuations in temperature and irregular watering - even when you have been watering twice a day!

Pick off and burn (don't compost) the affected fruit, water twice a day when hot and shade/ventilate the greenhouse as much as possible. Then fingers crossed - but you are not alone with naff toms this year, not that that is much consolation!
