Rammed earth tyre walls.
This one is short and sweet. Does anyone have any experience, knowledge, or hints about building rammed earth tyre walls?
We are seriously contemplating this for our self build, we plan to experiment with a workshop first to master the technique and learn how to problem solve the corners, doorways and windows.
We would love to hear of your experience or ideas.

there are some good videos of tyre filling on youtube, one of them I saw ages ago and can't find now used 3 rows of earth filled tyres and then placed straw bales on top of them, nice looking building.

Re: Rammed earth tyre walls.
I love the concept of Earthships and their self contained systems. The only things that worry me are the amount of physical work involved to pound that many tyres. I think I would have a go and see how hard it is to pound say 10 tyres in a day before I embarked on a major project.
The other problem I have heard with tyre walls is 'off-gassing' but I don't know how much of a problem this would be once the tyres are buried and rendered.

Tyres aren't recommended for growing food in anymore. They do leach but not a problem for humans etc.
Earthbag walls seem to be easier. I've tried filling tyres before. It's not easy.

I've been building a tyre wall as a retaining wall in my back garden. The link on my thoughts, and links to other projects are here
