Madly busy

Post: # 26742Post Stonehead »

I've just popped in very quickly and found PMs from people wondering where I am. Well, we're extremely busy at the moment with fencing, the vegetables, the pigs, building stuff, hay making, digging out boulders, rebuilding cars, etc etc and are usually to be found working from 6am until well after 10pm.

I haven't used the computer at all for a couple of days and won't be back for a few more. So don't worry, I'll be back but only intermittently for the next month or so.

Fair play old bean. - It does seem to be a pretty tough life as a crofter, sounds like you really diserve that nettle beer at the end of a working day (always tastes better after a hard days toil too). Hope you get time to put your feet up soon.

Ha. I should be out there too, but the heat... *drags self to feet and goes to mix concrete* I feel guilty now. I'd love to see Stoney's list.

Meal breaks, tea breaks and late at night. However, workload means even those times are getting squeezed at the moment.

I'm just hoping for the temperatures to ease a bit as I have to dig a deep trench for a water pipe to the new pig pens. It's going to take a bit of digging as it will be about 100 metres long and deep enough not to freeze (so about 60cm) - and it will all be done by hand.

Go girl! Makes me feel better about the mere 10m I have to cover to take water to the veg beds!

Just finished work - early this time as it's only 9.30pm.

Another couple of busy days - I've now:
  • Dug out the base for the concrete slab to hold the trough in the new boar pen
Shifted a pile of granite boulders that were blocking the line of a new fence (by hand, one large boulder at a time)
Broken the handles of my maul, sledgehammer and pick axe - then repaired all of them
Put as much netting and wire on the new fences as I could (ran out of insulated tensioners)
Cut back the weeds along the 18-month old hawthorn and blackthorn hedge (only to have a tractor-mounted sprayer slop something nasty that killed five of them)
Picked fresh raspberries, strawberries and blackcurrants (yum!)
    Done oodles more weeding
Dug out an overflow channel from the pig wallow (don't you just love the smell of silty, slimy mud that's 50% pig urine and has been sitting in the sun for a week)
And kept two small boys entertained!
Phew. No wonder I've just about emptied the keg of cider!

I've run out of time to to post here (again), but I have managed to get a few updates onto my blog if anyone is vaguely interested. I usually try to post both here and on the blog (on different things), but time is against me...

And now to bed at last!

Nah - I think a workoholic like him would drive me mad in the long run!

I just wish I could have a little bit of his energy!
