Sweeter onions

Post: # 26358Post Andy Hamilton »

Did you know that the closer to the equator an Onion is grown the sweeter it is?

I heard Antony Warral Thompson saying it once on Ready Steady Cook he did not say why though. Perhaps more sunlight?

He was probably only trying to justify flying em in at great expense and pollution.

I was in the local supermarket earlier this year and there were two sorts of red onions.

Unless you looked closely you would not have noticed that one lot was from Australia, the others from Cambridge.

I mean bloody Australia!. should have done a taste test to see which was sweeter

So you know how great Salsify is as a veg, what about Cavero Nero, great leaves all through the winter , then in Spring sprouting broccolli like flowers! Takes up half as much room as broccolli

You'd think you'd have those space and snow issues sorted by now...

Well, us ex-pat Aussie have to have Aussie onions to go with our Aussie steaks on our sandwiches (made with Aussie flour). Of course, the downside is the Kiwi butter we have to use...

Balls. A W-T should seriously think about using shallots instead, if he wants sweet. Or maybe throw a dried apricot in there too.

Now you come to mention it, I have never ever heard ANYONE describe an onion as sweet. Who chomps into an onion and says, "Mmm, sweet!"

...They put the word on pickled onions, but their not sweet either... :?

Weird.

Actually one of the Evil Supermarkets here did a trial with an onion that IS sweet enough to eat like an apple - don't know if it's still going, but apparently they weren't sufficiently oniony for people to fork out the dosh for!

My youngest son!

He also likes to suck lemons...

Hmm, I also remember a Greek kid when I was at school back in Oz, He used to eat raw onions, but the downside was that the rest of the kids changed his name from Nicholas Theodore to "Nickel Arse the Odour"!!!
