i was wondering if it is ok to add ash from a stove that burns peat and logs to a compost heap ?
a neighbour has a regular supply and i thought i could put it to use

Yes, that'll be fine if it's wood and peat. Mix it well in to distribute it well through teh heap if you can, and don't use too much altogether. Avoid coal ash.

It might make the compost heap an inhospitable environments for the worms that play such a sterling role in breaking the compost down. When I've had wood ash available, I've normally mixed it directly with the soil... I suppose the same argument could apply but it is at a lower concentration and the clay in my garden needs all the additives it can get!
