How do you stop your cat from crapping in your garden

Post: # 259040Post sleepyowl »

I'm having a problem with every time I plant something Jezebel goes & has a shit where I have just planted. therefore the cranesbill geraniums I have planted have not come up & I'm worried that my dahlias are going to suffer the same fate. How can I stop my cat from using where I have planted stuff as a toilet that would make unpleasant but not harmful to her so she doesn't keep doing it, as I can't be there 24/7 with a water pistol. If not are there any good recipes for cat?

we put netting over the young plants in our raised beds in spring until everything is established to stop cats/bird or whatever destroying them. once everything is bursting through the netting we remove it, or just cut holes for the foliage to come through without having to remove the whole thing. need to make sure its properly secured down round the edges though or they'll find a way in underneath it, dont leave any gaps.

Provide a nice piece of freshly dug earth closer to the back door/cat flap that they'll use in preference.

When I've got freshly planted seeds in the raised beds,I cover each bed with plastic mesh type matting(buy by the metre at garden centres)its in square grid type pattern, fairly rigid so won't have to worry about it blowing away, and the cats can't scratch enough dirt so don't bother using the beds.I guess also you could buy some cheap clotches, and remove them when the plants are big enough?

Water pistols work well at detering cats I think, and so much less permanent than an Air Rifle.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.

i think the key is to provide an inviting crapping area. when it's raining so much an area that's dry and sandy would be the ideal kitty loo
