Hi from Exmoor

Post: # 25452Post debbie »

Hi. We moved here from London and the rat race 6 years ago and now have our own 20 acres of Devon. We rear all our own pork, chicken and lamb and are self sufficient in these as well as eggs and as much of our veg as possible. We are not registered organic but rear our animals and keep our land as organic as we can. All this is a steep learning curve for us particularly with the veg growing so I am really looking forward to joining and picking your brains!

Hiya Debbbie, and welcome!

Sounds like a good setup - enough land for livestock and veg... Enviable! Do you produce enough to sell or barter, too?

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Ina, yes we are now in a position where we have a surplus for sale/barter but that is all very new to us. so far we have only raised for ourselves and a few family and friends. The meat side is very important to us ethically. basically if we don't rear it we don't eat it with the exception of beef that we get from our friend and neighbour a side at a time.

I am really looking forward to learning more from you all particuarly with regard to veg growing (to say that i don't have green fingers is an understatement) and home brewing.

I missed your original post, but I would like to offer my belated welcome to the forum- where in/on exmoor are you? I might be in the market for a barter of wine for something, if you were interested as I'm not a million miles from Exmoor, anyway once again welcome namesake!

kind thoughts
Deb

Hello there and welcome to the forum. I am sure that you are more greenfingered than you give your self credit for. Especially if you mange to grow a lot of your veg.

Thanks Glenniedragon. Yes always up for a barter. Wine making is something that I really want to try so will be picking your brains. We are on the moor above Lynton and Lynmouth in North devon.

Thank you Andy. I do try with the veg but some things are more sucesful than others....leaks no problem...peas, runner beans, not bad...carrots useless!

I find most of my problem is timing hence joining up here so that I can see what everyone else is doing when - I usually have to leave it a bit longer as we are high up on the moor and don't have typical devon weather though.
