I couldn't think of a use for my broken water butt, and was holding onto it - AND I wanted a wormery but couldn't afford one - my composting has been a failure so I'm hoping this is better (any how it's against my principles to let a creature die unnecessarily so I'll have to care for my worms.

Am a bit squeamish about collecting a kilo of worms and transporting them though

I know what you mean. When I collected them the shop owner didnt have a spare plastic bag, and I forgot mine. So In the end I carried them home in my handbag. It was the only way of getting them back in the dark. Sorry forgot to say they were in a plastic take away box as well.

Hello all,

Returning from long gap spent bookwriting.

Useful thread. I've been composting so far but decided to go for a wormery as well to get the liquid fertiliser. I've got an old waterbutt with a tap near the bottom. Also have some gravel for the bottom and thick plastic to keep the compost away from the tap.

Only thing I'm wondering is how to get the compost out that the worms have made. I'm guessing you have to tip the whole thing over and then pick out the worms and put them back? How often would you have to do this?

Can't I just put worms in my compost bin?

If your compost bins are on open ground, rather than on hard-standing, it will most likely already have worms in it!

No, I have a plastic compost bin with many many holes in, standing on two bricks so i t can drain if needed, in my concrete yard.

In that case you could chuck a batch of brandling worms in (from an angling shop). You'll need to keep them warm in winter though - I'm afraid mine didn't survive in a plastic worm bin.

Hmmm, think I'll get a separate wormery that I'll try and do properly!

I don't think it will be very big though, I'll insulate it so they don't get too cold through the winter. Any ideas what with anyone?
