My first new potato....

Post: # 23848Post ina »

And yes, I mean "potato", singular!

One of the potted plants in the polytunnel had been looking a bit sorry for itself. Didn't look like blight, but I took it away from it's mates anyway, just to be sure - today I checked why it was so small and wilting, and found a bloody leatherjacket had more or less eaten through the stem just below ground! Even in pots the plants aren't safe from them... Needless to say, that leatherjacket is no more. (Which reminds me, I'd better clean my knife before I use it for lunch again! :? )

And there was one small, new potato. Not quite enough for a meal yet, but it's a start!

Sometimes it is all you need to keep you going. - Its not been the easiest year up there so far has it?

Well, I think none of us has had a perfect year so far! It had been quite dry the last few weeks - but the last couple of days have made up for that, too. Gives us something new to complain about!

You got me digging too!!!

I had some self-seeded ones from last year - I finally weeded them out and got a handful of little Bintjes - they're a bit scabby but considering they have never been watered and it hasn't rained for a month, not bad!

Also dug up one of my early spuds and got a decent handful from that one too. I will leave the rest for a couple more weeks however!

Yum Yum (I hope!).

I'm 'over the moon' with the yield that I've had so far off my first early Potatoes-I've given quite a few away to friends, and was rather chuffed yesterday when an old gardener, who used to run a smallholding (smallholding?-he had pigs,Turkeys and three hundred Chickens at one time!) described them as "Delightful".
High praise indeed!

I'll have a look under one of the larger plants today - need some tatties for tea. I also "harvested" my first pea yesterday! Well, not just one pea, an entire pod. All from the tunnel, though.

Ours are quite good .I dug up 2 plants and there were too many to have for tea yesterday. They are Orla from the organic gardening catalogue.
We are in Kent though so probably they've been in a bit longer and I did cloche them to start with.

how do you tell whether they're ready to be dug up? my veg patch is overrun with them, and i want to dig them up because they're overtaking...but i don't want to dig them up too early.

Someone told me to wait until the foliage has died for New potatoes, and for the whole lot of the green stuff to die to get bigger potatoes (proper potatoes?!).

That's about right; but if you want just enough for a meal, you can have a go earlier. I've got a lot in pots, so I'll just empty one pot at a time - this one wasn't a lot, the next will probably be better... But I needed the pot for a pumpkin plant!

We had new tatties last night too!

I dug up a plant which is still alive and kicking and hasn't gone over yet - got enough for 3 people! If you have lots of plants, dig one up and have a look - you might as well start eating some of the spuds now, even if they aren't that big.

so they're not going to be horrible if they're not ready to come up yet then?

I've got about 3 different patches (the tatties spread themselves this year..) so maybe i'll dig one up later and see what's going on.

horrible? no way, the tiny ones are gorgeous!, I have a problem making myself leave them in the ground long enough for any of the tops to die back.

I keep getting into trouble for 'thinning' the carrots as well at the moment
