So how did they come up with the name? My sister did a printing apprentice and her year as the printers devil was, well, hellish! (The printers devil is the youngest apprentice and they get all the worst jobs, have endless jokes played on them, and have to go through a disgusting initiation to mark the end of their first year.)

It is opposite the Evening post building (one of Bristols local papers) - I am not sure other than that. - your poor sister stonehead, although I think we have all been there with the bad jobs.

..........and yes the booze was good too :drunken:

self sufficient...if stuff happens!

I was on a Health and Safety union course with a printer, and he just used to say things like "well i'll tell the bosses, but it won't make any difference". It sounded like a nightmare, totally dangerous, and probably health reducing in all aspects. Pricked fingers and tripping on a long hem seemed tame in comparison (OK there were more serious injuries we could have had, honest...)

You don't know the half of it. Antiquated presses that flies apart, burst into flames or shorts out; and then all the hazards of very high speed machinery. Oh, and 1.5 ton rolls of newsprint that get away... Dangerous chemicals, bright lights and extremely loud noise (meaning you wear heavy duty ear defenders, so you have to rely on sight alone to warn you of danger).

You get a printer working on the delivery fans and another guy comes in to start the press, ignores the lock-outs and that's one printer less. Getting crushed between rolls of newsprint is usually described as "death by mechanical asphyxia", while having one fall on your head is "severe impact injuries".

Fall off your chair onto the spike on your desk (in the old days of hard copy typed on paper, the spike was where the story slips went) and that's it, game over.

I've been a union rep, a health and safety rep, and a first aider, and print media is definitely not a safe place to be!

Anyway, another suggestion for ISH

I Suffer Happily!
