Store red cabbage?

The whole reason for the selfsufficientish website was to offer a place where anyone can ask, HOW DO I...? So who knows why it has taken us so long to have a HOW DO I? section, but here it is. So if you want to know how to do anything selfsufficientish then here is the place to ask.

Store red cabbage?

Post: # 242326Post bonniethomas06 »

I have eight beautiful heads of red cabbage in the garden. MY veg book says to store them in the shed with salt sprinkled on the outside to keep slugs off.

I do have a spare fridge in the garage - would it be better to wrap them in clingfilm and store them in there do you think?

I will also braise some in cider and freeze it, but I can't do that to all of it.

Thanks for any tips.

The usual storage method is pickled. Mmmm pickled cabbage and steak and kidney pie

As long as they're not split, they can be kept for a few months - but only in cold weather. They need to be cool, but never frosted or frozen, and kept very dry (which is why they rot in the fridge after a few weeks) and they need to be off the ground - hanging in nets is the traditional method. It does work - I've kept compact cabbages (green and red) through an entire winter like this.
