Coriander in pots

I have tried sowing Coriander seeds for the first time: I put about 20 seeds into a pot of home grown compost, covered with an upturned glass saucer & eventually a very few germinated (around the edge): What did I do wrong?
I really, really need this for my Carrot & Coriander soup! Should I transplant & have individual plants, or don't they make good indoor plants if single?
