Hi everyone!

Post: # 238926Post Juebob »

Hi Gang
I live in Bedfordshire and am about to (hopefully) move into a new house with a large (half acre) north facing garden.
I'd like to start a good sized veg garden and I have asked for a potting shed for Christmas!
What would be the first thing to do, to start efficiently making a veg plot work well? The east facing side of the garden would get the most sunlight and there is a brick wall to the west boundary.
I'd like to grow standard veg - nothing unusual, salads & soft fruit.
Can anyone recommend a good book that basically says "It's third week in February, start sowing such-and-such"
I look forward to learning lots and sharing your news and mine!

Hi there and welcome
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!

Welcome to ISH :flower:

The 'book' you seek is infact this group! People here can help you in your endevours.

The best piece of advice I would offer is to tackle just one smallish patch, say 4M by 4M, and thouroughly clear it of weeds & rubbish. Don't try to 'do' the whole garden at once, you'll just end up knackered & disheartened.

If you just mow or strim the rest, it'll be tidy & you'll keep quite alot of weeds at bay that waty 'till you are ready to tackle the next patch.

There is also the other piece of advice that is given to folk moving to a new garden: 'spend your first year just watching what comes up!' It would be a shame if you killed plants that perhaps could have been moved, had you known they were there.

Enjoy your new hobby!

Thanks to all for your warm welcome.

Muddy Witch, that is exactly the advice I need! I don't plan to turn the entire garden into a veggie spot, just a part of it which is about 40ft by 18ft in total.
There is nothing but a field of dandelions in the entire plot, with which I hope to make wine with.
Thanks for your advice, I'll let you know how I get on.
:-)
