Is that because of the cane toad though Nev?

We used to always go collecting frog spawn as kids. When I get a pond on my alltoment after this season I will be doing the same. I must admit I don't know for 100% but I think it is ok. Make sure you don't collect from environmental protected areas.

I don't know about the legalities of taking frogspawn, but I do know that a major reason for not bringng it home from elsewhere is because you could be introducing some nasty frog disease, I can't remember what it's called. I reckon it's ok if it's really local, but if your pond is any good, frogs will find their way there anyway.

btw hi

Hi Libby, and hi Woodburner - welcome both of you!

And one of these days my pond will be ready for frogspawn, too... We have some quite local, so I'll be transferring some from there (not quite local enough for the frogs to find their own way). Mind you, if it keeps raining like it has been for the last three days, they come swimming down the hill

hi libby

Welcome to Ish!! Bolton eh.... used to go out there with a few friends from school (yikes... that was many moons ago!!) and there was a great market too.

No frog spawn here.. and pond will be for ducks and geese  we are by the river though and there is water all around (not just from the rain!) so hopefully will be plenty frogs anyway.

I had literally thousands of tadpoles this year. They all started to congregate in one very shallow area after the carp started splashing around the edges of the pond - I think they were eating them but not sure. I spent ages watching them grow little legs and start turning into little frogs - haven't done that since I was a kid.

However a naughty heron took the last of the tadpoles but by that time there were loads of little frogs living in the water mint by the edge of the pond.

Now they have gone but there are a few little frogs to be seen here and there - either they have dispersed all over the place or the heron got most of them too. They are so tiny and cute!

Also hello and welcome to Libby and Woodburner!

hello there woodburner and cheers for posting about frogspawn, it makes sense. I do remember as kids we would go to the local park and collect buckets of spawn and frogs. For the life of me I can't remember why.

Hi Woodburner :D

Andy.. we did the same... and newts and stuff too... so naughty!! We did it because we could see them grow and it was fun but probably not in the best interests of the frogs and newts..

It's cos you (we) didn't have computers, playstations and all that rubbish. We were REAL kids and we had real proper outdoorsy fun!
