nick names

Post: # 23844Post Andy Hamilton »

The earlier gnome topic got me thinking about nicknames that I have had. such as handrill, meltdown man and Smythey to name but a few.

I wonder if the internet has had much influence and if kids at school are now called alteredbeast2001 or whatever?

Handrill as it sounds a bit like Andrew, meltdown as I would always fall asleep at parties and meltdown was a version of hameltdown (get it?) Smythey short for hamilton-smythe my nickname when I lived in notts. I was considered posh as I was going to move to Bath.

 I thought that was our family's prerogative - my brother and I were both famous for that (although we rarely went to the same parties, being 7 years apart)!

Quite complicated nicknames, though...

You did have some weird nicknames!

Mine was 'Pooh'. Not because I smelled but because of mymaiden name which was Winstone. That got morphed into Winnie then some bright spark decided to drop the Winnie and concentrate on Pooh...

Babs.

Nothing to do with the internet, but the name my brother gave me as I'm the baby of the family (a fair bit younger than he & our sister). Snag is, I'm almost 35 & he still calls me Babs, so do most of his friends who don't have a clue what my real name is...

I have been called

Carter (after Jimmy Carter president of America, because when he smiled he always had big teeth. Apparently, I show a lot of my teeth when I smile)

Knasher (used to wear a Dennis the Menace type jumper rather a lot)

Batley ~ like my name 'Natley'

Tomahawk ~ I had rather spikey hair when I was younger and used to wear feathery earrings.

And of course many other silly names.
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!

For some reason most of mine contain 4 letters and are not repeatable in polite company.

I have been called the Swede or Sween (corruption of Sweeney obviously) and weed - same derivation also enjay (my first two initials). A favourite greeting from a guy I sed to work with was "wahtsay enjay".

In the same vein, I used to work with a Chnese guy called Joe Ho and one of the guys greeting for him every morning was "Hi Ho"! :?
