Winter Veg

Post: # 237487Post thesunflowergal »

Hi All
I don't normally grow veg during the winter (haven't a clue why), but this year with the food prices etc I thought I'd have a go. Normally I freeze/perserve as much as possible during the summer/autumn.
I have some leeks, cabbage, giant red mustard, spinach beet, carrots in. I have just bought some carvalo nero seeds to try. I assume I am too late for parsnips and much else, or is there anything that I could grow please??
Thanks Nikki

What about some oriental greens?

These seem to have a good selection:

I have just sown some parsnips Nikki, I don't think it is too late - I sowed them this time last year and they were fine - just smaller than the earlier lot, but at least they don't get woody and split if they are in the ground too long.

Also - spring cabbage and savoy cabbage - can you get some small plants like Purple Sprouting from the shops? Actually, thinking about it, I have some Kale plants spare and some other brassicas which I was just about to plant out into their winter spaces, which you are very welcome too if you are over this way? We ate tonnes of the kale last year, it is the Cavollo Nero sort.

Was also about to sow some perpetual spinach as had good success with that last year, with a little protection it went on and on over winter.

Do! Sorry Nikki just re-read properly and see that you have already bought some cavollo nero. I would sow it anyway, and if you want some plants as well, just let me know. That would be ideal, as then when the plant becomes exhausted (as mine did by about Feb) and the leaves get all piddly, you will have a second generation coming up to take over!
