Yes. I was once in a pub (I know!) when the pub phone rang (this was marginally before the days of universal mobiles). The landlord answered it, handed me the phone, and said "It's for you". It was, too - it was a friend of mine who wanted to know if I fancied a pint. As I was already having one, I said yes. "Right", he said "I'll come down. Where are you?"

The thing is, stupid people aren't necessarily uneducated. What gets me is that they have THE greatest life tool right at their fingertips & they completely misuse it - or rather, they don't use it for the right purposes.

Anyway, I'm glad I know what a search button is for... and I also have some HUGE strawberries on the way

I bet if you asked people if there was any connection between flowers and fruit 90% would have no idea.

Sad how disconnected we have become from the 'natural' world.

I can't help but think "at least she tried"

We live in a strange world where a huge proportion of the population of westernised world buys all their food in plastic and is discusted by the thought that dirt may have ever touched food....

at least some people try.... :dontknow:

That made me laugh!

But then I have to agree with Ann Pan, and if someone so out of touch with growing things was inspired by you to give it a go, well you have to be proud of that

Didnt think you lived so rural Julie. When we visited you it was only two minutes from a small town! Connemarra is rural. Also people are not always 'in tune' with people who see to them selves! You have to have an understanding of other folk. Give and take. That's what Pete say's too.
Also I would love to have a look at the book Pete sent you a long time ago, and it's not been returned, worth a few bob as well. Any comments!

Also please don't delete this as you did Pete's asking for the book on Facebook. It means a lot to him as it was his Grandmothers. So if you have sold it, just be honest about it .

I dont think this is the place for this. if you have a beef with someone, then do it through the proper channels. This forum is not one of those channels.

Yep, 5k from the village Gill, that's right. And Pete's book? Is on the bookshelf in the store room - he was asked to give me his address as I didn't have it. Never happened, so unless I'm supposed to be psychic....... On another note though, I did actually manage to get a copy of the book on ebay too - a snip at €4.80.
There's loads on there too. All the other Mrs Beeton stuff is on eBooks as well, a lot are free so I have amassed a fair bit on the Kindle.

So, if you want to be middle man Gill, feel free & ask Pete to send me an address & the book will be in the post. Ta.

Gilly,

We don't have many rules on this forum but one of our most basic ones is 'Be Nice'

From our rules:
Being Nice

The clue is in the title "be nice". Treat others as you would wish to be treated, and Selfsufficientish.com will continue to be a happy group. There is no need for throwing insults or names at each other, perhaps take some time out and try to see things from a distance. Selfsufficientish prides itself on being friendly and welcoming.

If you have a problem with another member try and sort it out with them, if this does not work or you feel threatened by someone then please contact a moderator.
This is not the place to air your personal grievances with other members of the forum.

We would be grateful if, in future, you would make your posts more in keeping with the ethos of Selfsufficientish

Please take a moment to read our simple and fair rules before you consider posting on the forum again.

This post has been made in public to make it clear to all forum members that bullying will not be tolerated.

To be fair, I don't think Gill meant her post to come across so harsh, Ann.

Waaa-aaa-aaayyy back in '96, I became an AOL Guide in the chat rooms & one of the first things I was told was that some folks have the natural ability to 'smile from the wrists down'. And that is why some of us were asked by AOL to join the troops. I think there are others who don't have this talent & then don't recognise how their posts come across.

I could of course be totally wrong & Gill might feel aggrieved that I left Pete's little forum because I was uncomfortable with the clique-yness of it all a couple of years ago.
Ah well.

Julie, you are such a kind a fair lady  Anns post was a combined effort by the mods based on a consensus of opinion by those available at the time. It was a judgement call that the mods make to keep the forum sweet.
Anyway - back on topic........
I once wore a coney jacket to the pub and was accosted by a gentleman (?) who told me that I shouldn't be wearing it because most of the animals that they use to make fur coats are becoming extinct. I looked at him quizzically and said "rabbits?" Then I told him that when he stopped wearing animal skin in the form of leather on his feet, then and only then would he have the right to criticise me. He pointed to his shoes and announced "these aren't leather - they're suede!"
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!
