Never forgotten, my dad

Post: # 23605Post circlecross »

I still miss you dad, and wish you were here to tell me how to be a better gardener, aswell as a better everything else.
I didn't notice how mad mum was when you were there to diffuse it, and I miss your calm, and our silences.
The shrine that is your shed had me in tears the other day - to think I used to nag you to recycle, when you were constantly recycling bits of wood, old bits of this and that, and the (in)famous "psychadelic slug pubs" made out of plastic milk bottles, and painted by you in camouflage colours, for reasons, I know not, except to make yourself snigger.

I miss your humour, and your meanness. I miss seeing you standing in the greenhouse, pipe in one hand, jug of "nyucky stuff" (beer) in the other, scowling at the tomatoes, willing them to grow.

It's not fair. I wish you were here.

Happy Father's Day
love Susan

That's a lovely little memory thread for Fathers Day.

I am only sorry that I dont feel that way about my dad. (I am afraid he's just dreadful, still around ~ honest to goodness he is)

You could be talking about my grandads shed tho'. A great gardener, story teller and great recycler of things. My particular fond memory is the ex icecream box of stones outside the backdoor to chuck at the cats!

I miss him more.

I love both your Dad and Grandad memories, especially the container of rocks to chuck at cats, ha ha. My Dad has long passed away now, he absolutely hated cats too, and this is awful but he once glued drawing pins, pin side up onto the top of a piece of fence where this same cat kept coming in the garden......sorry cats lovers. I recently had the most wonderful dream about him, I saw him talking to some other gardeners/farmers and we talked about gardening, he told me he was proud of my vegetable garden - I hadn't started gardening at all when he died as I was only 16 (now just over twice that!), it was just the loveliest dream and I treasure it. Silly me.

I do have a cat, but we have MILLIONs of the beggars around here! I am not a cat lover but my mum bought the puss for my eldest son, when my youngest son was born. She's a cool cat but pretty low maintenance. Just as well. She's cute, but still a CAT!

My grandad told me so much about gardening. When we were kids we used to go gardening with him at big houses, do little jobs and learn about stuff like growing little gem lettuce and compost heaps etc. All VERY good experience. I remember everything he told me, in great detail. FAB memories. :flower:
