I hadn't heard of.

Someone bought me the bible for xmas. (The selfsufficientish one not the old made up one!)
Re: What brought you here?
Some people might actually find that kind of comment unnecessary and offensive.clanpowell wrote:Someone bought me the bible for xmas. (The selfsufficientish one not the old made up one!)

Re: What brought you here?
I find alot of the stuff in the old one and done in it's name unnecessary and offensive, but I think that's a discussion for a different topic. The selfsufficientish bible on the other hand is niether unnecessary or offensive but a great guide for how to try and live your life.
Re: What brought you here?
With respect, RuthG, it couldn't (or shouldn't) be offensive. The bible as in OT and NT is demonstrably a subset of a vast collection of literature selected and collated by the early christian church. Therefore, it's made up. I see nothing to offend in that.

Re: What brought you here?
There are those who treat it as sacred and to have fun poked at it is offensive. People who like the Bible do not (or should not) go round poking fun at the lifestyle choices of others. It's all a matter of respect. And i am sorry if this is off topic, but it IS offensive to me.
Re: What brought you here?
I agree with RuthG re being respectful of others. I'm not religious myself but having a degree in Theology have a good understanding of faith and how personal an experience this is and how important sacred texts are to people with faith. Sacred texts are used as a 'guide for how to live your life' too in the same way Clanpowell is suggesting of the self-sufficiency bible.
Having said that RuthG some of the comments you have made on the 'National Service' topic indicate a view of certain people's 'lifestyle choices' that you feel you have the right to comment on. I wonder if those people would find your comments offensive.

Re: What brought you here?
I'm sorry that you feel offended, RuthG. But have you thought that there may be an alternative way of looking at things in which an insistence on the rectitude of any set of ancient documents is also offensive? I believe what I believe, a situation based upon years of reading and research - and I do mean years. Having reached my own conclusions, that's fine for me and I choose not to foist my opinions upon anyone else. I reserve the right to respect and defend anyone's belief system. Had there been an attack on yours, I'd be right there beside you - but I don't see what Clanpowell said as any form of attack. Merely an expression of opinion, in fact.

Such comments as "The bible as in OT and NT is demonstrably a subset of a vast collection of literature selected and collated by the early christian church. Therefore, it's made up." are not opinion; it was stated as fact.
Re the thread on national service, I was not poking fun at anyone's lifestyle choice but expressing an opinion on those who wish to live off the backs of others.

Re: What brought you here?
It was stated as fact because it IS fact. There isn't a christian scholar in this world who would argue otherwise.
