Hello from London

Post: # 23347Post Molly »

Hello,

I live in a house in London with 6 students (although some try to pretend that they've got real jobs). We are trying are hand at growing our own veg (carrots, letuce, tomatoes, radishes, butternut squash, courgette, peas.....) in our back garden, and trying to recyle as much as we can. We now have a compost heap, and our plant pots are made from old containers.

I want to get some alpaccas but our land lady said no.

Awesom site by the way.

Hi there Molly and welcome to the site. Lucky you having house-mates who are interested in growing veg. When I used to house share I was the only person who showed any interest in gardening whatsoever! Good luck with your garden.

Alpacas

Post: # 23391Post Molly »

Alpacas (I think you can spell it Alpaccas as well - but I am dyslexic) are the best thing since sliced bread. They're basically a much improved version of sheep.

Part of the Camelid family (not actually related to sheep), they orginally come from Peru, and they look like tiny camels without humps. Very much like llamas, but they don't spit!

Just google alpaca and you can find out how awesom they are.

Apparently they are not inbred like sheep, so are much more disease resistant. They birth their one baby (pregnant for 11 months!) by themselves in the morning (between 10 and 2), not like sheep where you'd have to sit up all night with the vet.

Their wool is of much higher quality. It's really really soft. Like touching a cloud! Also, they because of the way their camelid toes, they don't mess up the ground in winter when it's all rainy and muddy.

Basically they are better than sheep in every way, and look much more interesting!

In fact, I'm going to start a new alpaca thread right now.

Hello Molly and welcome

I like the sound of having alpacas. Will look at your thread and sigh as I'm sure we don't have room for them to live happily.

Good luck with the veg.

regards

Sharon

Hi Molly, and welcome to the site!

Must put in a good word for our sheep, though... Alpacas are fine as pets, but if they were commercially viable, everybody in Britain would keep them! And we don't stay up all night with the vet when our sheep are lambing - nobody would have that sort of money...

You can't deny that sheep are fabulous. It's so cool going and feeding our neighbourghs lambs. They're so cute, bouncying around the farm.
