Jersey Walking Stick.

Post: # 22854Post Lou8 »

Ina gave Jo and I seedlings of this to try growing. I have just been googling it and it is actually fascinating. It is a kale which grows to about 13 feet high and there was a whole industry in Jersey growing it and making it into walking sticks. They seem to have used the leaves as animal feed.

Well, the catalogue said nothing about animal feed... I intend to feed myself with it! If I don't like it, the goats surely will.

Planted my first one yesterday, in a spot that so far has been free of slugs, so keep fingers crossed.

I am struggling with slugs so I have just replanted it into a bigger pot for the time being to let it get more established before I risk it.
No idea where I'm going to put it though - I need a bigger garden!

Guess why I've been handing out seedlings - don't know where to put all mine!

Maybe we can have a new competition next year - instead of who grows the tallest sunflower, who grows the tallest walking stick???

I think I grew this last year. I bought some seeds just called 'chou fourrager' which I think means something like fodder cabbage and it said it was for feeding to rabbits. However mine blew over a bit in the wind and I couldn't be bothered to stake it so it grew pretty horizontally. The stalk is still in the chicken run because (again!) I can't be bothered to move it!! It flowered whilst lying on the ground, uprooted!!

So I could go and make a walking stick from it!!! Bit of a thick one though.

If any of your plants survive the slugs, which I sincerely hope they do. You could use the stick for beating the slugs up with!
If in doubt ~ use a hammer!
