Hello from Ireland.
Hello from Ireland.
I've found myself reading this forum numerous times in the past few weeks when searching for random stuff, so I figured it was time to make my presence known. I never liked those guests that appear on forum listings, they just sit there all dark and mysterious reading your stuff and taking notes, probably wearing a big brown cloak and a fedora.
I'm currently living on an acreage in Ireland, I keep chickens, grow veg and generally live the good life.

Hi Mabu.
What county are you in, if you don't mind me asking? Or roughly what area, anyway.
How do you support yourself? It's interesting to hear of people in Ireland trying to live the iLife (ishLife). They are around but tend to stay below the radar.
Good luck anyway.

Greenorelse, I'm in Co. Waterford, we have a very small income from the lady and I do odd jobs. We live off 20-40 euro a week with plenty more going into savings. We gather our own wood, keep a large(ish) flock of hens and have plentiful veg. It really is a very simple life, but we have simple needs.
It's funny how doing all this stuff was normal a couple of decades ago here, now it is almost a disgrace to be seen digging the ground. There are definitely people around that are self-sufficient(ish) but unlike I, they are smart enough to keep their mouths shut about it.

You sound to be living an ideal existence. What a better world it might be if we all worked towards living with as little money as possible.Mabu wrote:Greenorelse, I'm in Co. Is it peaceful where you are? I mean, the only sounds I want to hear are those of animals, the sounds of hand tools, the noise of the weather, the sound of people talking (not one-side conversations via a phone of course); often, the dominant noise - sometimes the only noise - is the infernal combustion engine.
I find that peace and quiet enable a body to be happier with less.

Re: Hello from Ireland.
I'm in town, surrounded by neighbours but you wouldn't know it once you're out digging. Apart from the ice cream van and some child that screams their dog's name for hours on end it's just the birds, the plants and I. I'd love an acreage out in the mountains where nobody can bother me, I am reclusive by nature.

Hi Mabu - welcome to Ish!
I'm up in north Galway, nearly Roscommon though. My main source of noise out where I am is the infernal dozen roosters that really just don't know when to shut up... oh hang on, they're mine!!
I AM going to get around to preparing them for the freezer.... but today is a digging day

The more people I meet, the more I like my garden

Re: Hello from Ireland.
To all Irish ishers: April and May are my favourite months, especially with the type of weather we're having now. As a friend of mine once said, "When it's cold, dark and wet, Ireland is the last place you want to be. When it's like it is now, it's the most beautiful place on earth." I'd still want to be here in the dark and wet - but indoors - but I know exactly what he was talking about.
