Ouch - Stonehead's curse gets personal

Post: # 22659Post Stonehead »

We've just got home after a long day in hospitals - Insch first and then Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Why? Because I got a hawthorn in my right eye! And I definitely mean "in" - it penetrated the iris and was catching on the muscle that dilates the pupil. Every change in light level made the muscle twitch and scrape on the thorn. It was very, very, very painful and resulted in a huge red eyeball.

The nurse in A&E at Insch couldn't get the thorn out, so it was over to the ARI A&E where I spent just an hour waiting to be triaged and another two hours in a tiny room with nothing to do except listen to various people screaming.

The doctor who got the thorn out had a morbid sense of humour - telling me "we don't get many agricultural accidents, they usually end up in the morgue". He winced having said it, but relaxed when he realised I thought was funny too!

So, it's an eye patch, no driving for a few days and a hefty dose of antibiotic cream in the eye several times a day.

I'm just glad it wasn't blackthorn...

Bloody ell, Stoney.

Wish you'd watch what you are doing...

Gotta admit, the pirate patch should help keep the tourists away. You can go out now and wave ya pitchfork, and yell "Och flee now ye fereners"
and watch em scramble.

Hope you feel better soon.

Eye Eye cap'n...!! You should have come to thainstone with us instead... much safer!!!

Anyway... jesting aside... OUCH... OUCH and thrice OUCH... Hope it feels better very quickly.

Just where is this stonehead? Can you move him to a remote place where he doesn't cause you any grief?!

What a pain in the....eye. Definately get some goggles. My other half managed to whip up a bit of metal into his eye last year when he was strimming. Now he wears goggles for everything ~ well almost!

I hope that your peeper feels better soon. At least you'll have to take it easy with an eye patch now.

If your other half has a cruel streak like I do...have a look at this!

Actually I have all manner of goggles and face protectors, and wear them whenever doing something hazardous. But somehow I still managed to get a hawthorn in my eye - not sure when as I didn't notice until this morning when I woke up with a throbbing and swollen eyeball.

The irony is that yesterday I did a number of potentially hazardous jobs - using an angle grinder, disinfecting the byre (with alkali based disinfectant) and peining the scythe - but none of them got me. Instead, nature gets me when I'm not looking!

The eye patch was more irritating than the injury. I threw it away this morning as it was that bad.

The eye isn't too bad this morning, but there is a big blurry spot in my vision. I told the OH it made her look better than ever - she growled!!

Are you trying for multicoloured eyes? One red and one black?

Good thing to have in the medicine cabinet - a bottle of "Euphrasia mother tincture" - it's the homoeopathic extract of Eyebright, the old traditional eye remedy.
Never use it neat - get a clean dropper bottle with some spring water in it, and add 10-15 drops of the tincture to a 5ml bottle -(keep adding until it's lager coloured) then drip into affected eye
I've found it remarkable for all sorts of eye problems - things in your eye, styes etc. 8)
I'm not the only one who's noticed - even our little local chemist stocks it! 8)

Amateurs encouraged - very keen prices and friendly helpful service!

I was going to offer you a pair of goggles - have a spare one - but the lack of those doesn't seem to be the problem!

These things always happen when you least expect them. Our shepherd got kicked in the eye last Tuesday by the last ewe he was dagging for the day... Just when you think everything is done, your concentration goes, and something is bound to happen. I'm glad you seem to be improving already!

But I would keep the eye patch handy, as Boots suggested... Any takers yet for the farm opposite?

Glad you are feeling a bit better - what a horrible thing to happen. Especially having to wait so long for treatment too. :(
