Shortage Potatoes & Onions

Post: # 226537Post pelmetman »

Had to go to our Farm Shop yesterday and the guy was telling us that potatoes and onions are hard to get hold of at the moment because of the awful winter so prices obviously will go up.

well potatoes here have been going up and up. last few weeks.. now about 50% more expensive than in January. and onions up as well, but not really noticed by exactly how much!

and not only are prices up, but quality is down too!

Why would the winter have affected them as they come out of the ground in the summer/autumn? :dontknow:

I'm still eating my maincrops and they were dug up 7 1/2 months ago. :thumbright:

As for onions, well they're all sprouting at the moment whether home grown or shop bought, roll on the new fresh ones in summer!

Probably because they are stored in clamps on the farm and the normal insulation was not enough for the extreme low temperatures they had last winter.

Me too, in fact I just gave a bagful away as there is no way we will eat them all, especially as the new season's crop will hopefully be starting on May day.

Another good reason to grow your own ... or have I mentioned that before ?

Ah thank you didn't realise that.

I shall have to wait a bit longer before I tuck into new potatoes as they are still chitting on the windowsill at the moment....
