Hi from the Netherlands

We love hearing from you, so here is your chance. Introduce yourself and tell us what makes you selfsufficient 'ish'. Go on don't be shy, we welcome one and all. You can also tell us how you heard about us if you like.

Hi from the Netherlands

Post: # 224939Post Jorieke123 »

Hi! I am glad I found this forum :)
We (my boyfriend Joep and me) are getting more and more selfsufficient, but we did not have a lot of information about everything we want to know/do. Selfsufficiency is allmost not written about in Dutch. So after viewing the episodes of The Good Life (I would have never thought I would love a television show from long before I was born :) ), we searched some English terms on the internet, and we found this forum!

We have a big vegetable garden, a few animals (goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, geeze) and we are going to sow all kinds of wheats this year. (last year we harvestet a lot of corn. for our animals and for the kitchen :) )
We only have a fireplace, no central heating (we chose to).

This year we started to eat the chickens, and later this year we will bring 1 of our pigs to the slaughter house (can't do it ourselfs ;) ) The milk from the goats and sheep is going to be used for cheese.

I am sorry for my English. I can understand it perfectly, but sometimes I am making some mistakes :)

Welkom!

There are a few Dutch people active on the forum. Where are you located? (perhaps you can put it in your pofile) I'm Dutch, live in Germany, on the Dutch border near Nijmegen.

Hi Jorieke123, welcome to Ish.

Sounds like you have a wonderful set-up down there. And don't worry about your English - it seemed very good to me.

Welcome to ISH :flower:

Your English is fine, better than many british teenagers can manage, if my daughter's 'Facebook' friends are anything to go by.

welcome from another dutchie from north limburg :)
its always great to see more of our country finding the way to Ish.

but you are mistaken that in netherlands nothing is written about selfsufficiency.
we only call it consuminderen/ downshifting.
yes thats something different but among them are a lot of Ish people! do a google search and blogs etc.
we do have a magazine in our country www.genoeg.nl too.
but did you know that we also have a DUTCH River Cottage!! www.rivercottage.nl
they are actually goodwill ambassadors of River Cottage.
give workshops and stuff too.
also in netherlands we have some communities like Hobbitstee, who are trying to be selfsufficient.
I'd love to do what you are doing, too.......

feel free to PM

@Berti: Thank you for your reaction :)
I did not say there is NOTHING written, it is just not enough for me ;) I want more info, and there is just more info in English. You have to aggree :)
And 'consuminderen' is not really the main thing for us, because we consume allready as less as possible.
Maybe you can join the Moestuinforum(.nl) as well. There is a lot of info about the vegetable garden, but we are starting to write more about selfsufficiency (hard word ;) ) topics too.

Welcome Jorieke

Nice to meet you. Looking forward to hearing more about your cereal crops - something we are thinking about to feed our animals, as the price of food is going up and up. Do you have a tractor to harvest it all?

And don't worry about your english, it is better than some english people I know!

We are going to sow a lot of different types of wheats (I do not know the English terms..) to see wich are best to grow/eat ourselves/feed our animals. To see wich types of crops are easy to harvest, easy to store, etc.
We have our own (little) tractor and sowing 'machine' (it is not motorised). So we are going to try and try and try :D
