Poached Pears in Red Wine!

Post: # 221465Post happyhippy »

Hi all,
I just had a lightbulb moment!lol I brought a bottle of red mulled wine for Xmas but for some reason did'nt get round to using it!I've quite got a few pears in my fruit bowl so decided to make some Poached Pears in Red Wine for pudding!Easy peasy too!I peeled the pears and left them whole.Poured the mulled wine into a medium sized saucepan, grated some nutmeg, added a small amount of cinnimon(yes they were already in the wine, but decided to add abit more for good measure!)Brought wine to the boil, turned it down to a simmer, added pears, simmered for 20 mins, took them out, kept wine simmering until it reduced and went syrupy. Will eat pears tonight, with some syrup spooned over them with vanilla icecream!Delish!

Yumm...

We make a big pan of poached pears each year for the holidays.
The variety we use is sold as ''Giesser Wildeman'' overhere, a small rock-hard pear.
Some water,a lot of ruby port, dark honey, cinnamon, cardamon and a couple of cloves to give them a little kick.

Once we had so many I made a pear pie with them after the holidays.
Same basic recipe as apple pie,but I popped the poached pears in the oven first to lose some of the soggyness.
Added some extra dark chocolate (the 80% cocoa type)...fabulous.

One more suggestion...
I served the pie with whipped cream, sweetened with ginger syrup.
