got me first allotment and the site manager has said i can have the old currant bush right in the middle of a pathway if i dig it out and resite it on my plot (before they rotavate!)
obviously i will need a strong fork and a strong back, but are there wide rootballs etc i need to be aware of?

Assuming a large blackcurrant, they have big roots rather than a rootball as such, so need to dig out a wide circle to get as much root as possible. Blackcurrants fruit on young wood, so when transplanting be ruthless and prune back to ground level all but the youngest shoots, this will help establish the plant if you don't manage to get all the roots out.

If the roots are really long,say 2ft plus,it wouldn't hurt to prune them too,specially if you've ripped a couple lifting it out,say back to 18''.
