That bloody Hugh Fernly and his suggestions

Post: # 21909Post Andy Hamilton »

I was reading one of the river cottage books yesterday and under June mr Hugh Furnley had written, "I like to have a day's work done by 12am and get up at 4am." He suggests that in june this is a good idea. Whilst reading I thought nah not for me, but it must have stuck somewhere in my brain here I am I have been up for half an hour. About to have a bacon sandwhich and head off to the allotment.

And I thought you hadn't even gone to bed yet!

But I must admit, I like to get up early, too. Not that early, maybe. And definitely no bacon sandwich in the middle of the night...

I think its a great idea - IF you haven't got children. Its bad enough being woken at something past 5 every morning by Jonathan... though I really must start going to be earlier and then it won't be such a strain to drag my tired self out of bed in the mornings; Nonetheless... despite getting up late this morning.... (J slept in and didn't wake until 6.45 YAY - of course I had woken at something past five as usual but kept drifting in and out of sleep again) I've got a lot of stuff to do. Baking being one of them - need my chooks to start laying more, but one has gone broody and is stealing the eggs from the others to sit on. Bought a couple of packets of organic
bananas - reduced to 39p per pack so will be trying a couple of banana bread recipes and banana icecream & lollies for Jonathan.

Then this evening we are off to Hillbilly's for her DH to look at my car to see what is REALLY wrong with it - am so grateful for this, truly I am. There is an added bonus too - hope to come away reeking of wild garlic too - (spotted on a label while out with Ina.... 'it's chic to reek' !!)

M3 - it's barely dark at all at this time of the year in Aberdeenshire.

Happy Allotmenting Andy - hope you don't fall asleep by midday :flower:

I bought reduced bananas, too... Made banana bread yesterday with added coconut, sunflower seeds and raisins. No sugar. Very nice!

I Must say I am starting to feel a bit tiered now. I am not used to getting 4 hours sleep.

Mind you I have sorted out the old compost bin on my allotment, weeded around the bench, picked off loads of slugs and snails and let them loose on the weeds in the drive on the way up to the allotment, weeded some more and watered a bit. Then I cycled home before Emma awoke and made her packed lunch and breakfast in bed. The bike ride was wicked actually I go down a big hill on a main road, at 8am it is always chock a block with traffic. I wizzed passed on the inside lane, nice.

Now just been doing some web tinkering for the last hour and a half. I think I like getting up slightly early. Might not manage to keep it up though.

Not quite so early, especially when I have work the same day or have been out late. But I got up pretty early again today

I ended up having a snooze yesterday afternoon, really needed it.

We were woken at 4am this morning by somebody who'd lost 'Nibbler and Snoopy' out of his bed! After fumbling about looking for said teddies, I didn't really get back to sleep.

HFW has got kids but he's also got plenty of staff to help him thru his day.

Exactly!!!

I hope nibbler and snoopy were found quickly - how old is your little one Shiney??

We did well this morning... in that Jonathan didn't wake until 6.30am - that's a good lie in for us!! Must have been the late night foraging last night with Jo

Shirlz, Monty is 5 but will be 6 on Thursday. He's a great sleeper and doesn't really get up until about 7 each morning. It was those darn teds that had escaped during the night, that he can't sleep without.

The teenager is another case all together, I'm lucky to seem him up at the weekends before 10am! He does get up at 6.30am each morning to get ready to go to school and he doesn't get back until well after 6pm, as his school day finishes at 5pm.

It took about 5 mins to find the teds, which was lucky!

I'm generally an early riser. Awake at 12 midnight, 4am, 6am...but then I have a baby LOL! Even so, I like to be up at 6am, 6.30 at the latest as if I don't then I can't fit everything into the day. Even getting up at 6am, we don't get to bed till midnightish. GOD KNOWS what its going to be like when we get more livestock!?!?

And once in a while I get to sleep in. And its sheer unadulterated BLISS..

Seeing that this year's summer is supposed to take place today, I got up at 5 and started work in the tunnel...

Re livestock, and getting up early: When I did relieve milking a couple of years ago, we started at 3am. Which meant that I had to get up at 1.30... Sunday morning on the way to work I met all those coming back home from a night out!

 I think I will stick to the urban self sufficient and be one of the ones coming home.

Although something does appeal there. I did not think that I would enjoy getting up before 8am until recently.

I adore early mornings and would prefer to get up early and then have a decent afternoon nap - however, as with others here, I have a 2.5 year old and there fore my awakenings and pm sleepies are under his rule!

I guess I would be OK in mediterrian places but it's too hot there!
