buttermilk lake!

Post: # 219235Post WiseBird »

Hi everyone, :wave: didn't realise quite how long its been since I last looked in and now I could do with some help!!

My local supermarket has been selling cream at a very good price (19p for a large 600ml tub) as it is near its sell by date so I have been making butter like mad :lol:

The trouble is, now I have litres of buttermilk to use up...I have made scones, enjoyed the occasional banana milkshake, made pancakes and had wonderful yorkshire puddings and still I have jugs full of the stuff.

I was wondering if it is possible to use buttermilk to make yogurt...has anyone tried it? Or is there any reason not to give it a go? I make yoghurt with semi-skimmed milk all the time but if I can use the buttermilk it would certainly solve my buttermilk lake problem :lol:

Thanks!

A bit o' work and a bit o' fun;
Give us all in the struggle and sputter
Our daily bread and a bit o' butter.

Sounds wonderful, used to love making butter not sure but you could try freezing the buttermilk for later

Could you freeze it? Since you've pretty much removed the fat it shouldn't go sour too quickly.

Thanks milims and becks! Freezing is an option but unfortunately my (very large) chest freezer is completely full at the moment!!

Bread. Use it instead of water. Soda Bread and farls work particularly well but yeast risen bread is nice with it to.

now there's an idea...never thought of that and as I make all of the bread in our house it would certainly use it up! :thumbright:

I'm going to try some yogurt made with buttermilk today to see what happens...I'll let you know what happens...

What a brilliant idea to get super cheap butter as it's going up and up in price. I'm going to give it a go next time I see cheap cream :cheers:
