Hello over there!

Post: # 219045Post stevetc »

Hi there,
I'm steve, i live with my dog in a caravan on a site in Bristol. . . I'm not as self-sufficient as i'd like to be, but I've a solar panel on the roof, and i heat it with a wood burner, so i'm proper warm n snug and really enjoyin the winter. Food - i grow a bit, mostly just herbs tho - am told the land's contaminated, and prefer to skip food (getting harder these days!) so i've mostly just been planting daffodils recently.

My aim, really, is more about being 'low-impact' than 'self-sufficient', but i reckon they're often the much the same . . . Which is what lead me here . . . Am really pleased to have found this website . . . What a cool resource, can't believe i've only just discovered it . . .

Anyway, "hello" to everyone. (and apologies for any txt-speak. . . I'm on a mobile).

Hi Steve

Welcome to Ish

Do you know what your land is contaminated with and how bad? Because there are some plants you could grow to help clear it. I can't remember what they are, off the top of my head but a bit of judicious googling might provide some answers.

Thanks!
No, i don't know what the land's contaminated with . . . It has a derelict tower block on it and a couple of other bits of buildings . . . And the ground is about 2 parts soil to 1part broken bricks / glass / rusty bits of unidentifiable things . . . So i've mostly been growing hardy ornamental things. The whole gardening thing is pretty new to me, only started a couple of years back, so there's still a lot of experimentation going on. . .
We do have a compost toilet, though, which is starting to produce lovely compost, so i might branch out a bit this year. . . Watch this space!

Hi there and welcome!
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free

But damn it how happy we'll be!

I agree with OJ, in your situation, guerrilla (sp?) gardening is the way to go!
