Frozen onions and shallots

I know we have had really cold weather but i thought my onions and shallots that were stringed up in the shed and greenhouse would be ok...not so..they are frozen solid ..what can i do with them now ..our cabbages at the allotment were frozen solid and weighed a ton..when they thawed out they went a funny colour and smelt a bit dodgy ..basically what i'm asking is will my onions be ok when thawed or should i forget about them...and for future hints on where to keep them..

SusieGee..thank you..well it looks like i am going to have to compost them...and have just told hubby we have to insulate my shed..its has really peed me off..nevermind at least i can do something ready for next year..thank you

If you chop and freeze them again as soon as you can get a knife through them they should be fine - I agree that if you leave them they'll rot but act quickly you should be able to salvage them.

And don't worry about refreezing - being fat-free it's not a problem.

As for the shed and insulating it, flowertotmum, it's not as easy as you think. I have a shed that is insulated roof and sides but not the floor - the shed is raised up on blocks. I regret not having insulation under the floor but even then, I think it would make little difference and I hate running heaters in them.

I keep my emergency water supplies in there and yes, they're all frozen solid, along with a can of wee!

I think these extreme temperatures are going to call for extreme measures in the future, so start thinking now and do something about them in the summer. Straw bale sheds are your only man.

More simply,when the weather is as cold as now,lay the onions in straw in a hessian sack,or something as breathable,then hangem up again or whatever.Ditto the spuds,yonks ago winters were as bad as this,and so tatters were stored in clamps (usually outside,as the straw protected from several degrees of frost.I know I'm always banging on about clamping,but even if you cant ,you could insulate spud bags with straw.

Thanks all..me and hubby have agreed upon straw bales..we are going to insulate the shed from top to bottom..i have a strapping son and big hubby lol they can bloody well lift the shed up to insulate it underneath..
