Fair comment, but what he did before was work in an office, which had infrastructure to handle communication, and which also came with a regular income. What he does now is work freelance, so has to provide for the necessary communicaton himself. Inability to communicate = inability to get the work done = no income.greenorelse wrote:With respect, Zech, and not wishing to be at all argumentative, I find those phrases very irritating - "I need this for whatever" or "I need my car" or some such. What did they do before? What will they do when the mobile network fails or power goes or fuel gets scarce, which they will? Always have a back up plan!
For a while, the Blackberry WAS the back up, as it took two months to get broadband in our new house, during which time we discovered just how much we rely on it. It would be nice to think we could easily do without these new technologies, but by the end of two months, there were quite a few people getting pretty sick of me saying, "I'll read that attachment when I get broadband."
Going back to an internet-free life would require major changes for us, and would probably mean going back to an 'ordinary' lifestyle involving offices and suchlike. Having it gives us the freedom to move to a beautiful place where jobs are scarce and hence land is relatively cheap.
