Fair comment, but what he did before was work in an office, which had infrastructure to handle communication, and which also came with a regular income. What he does now is work freelance, so has to provide for the necessary communicaton himself. Inability to communicate = inability to get the work done = no income.

For a while, the Blackberry WAS the back up, as it took two months to get broadband in our new house, during which time we discovered just how much we rely on it. It would be nice to think we could easily do without these new technologies, but by the end of two months, there were quite a few people getting pretty sick of me saying, "I'll read that attachment when I get broadband."

Going back to an internet-free life would require major changes for us, and would probably mean going back to an 'ordinary' lifestyle involving offices and suchlike. Having it gives us the freedom to move to a beautiful place where jobs are scarce and hence land is relatively cheap.

I second that wholeheartedly, it's the reason I put up with my OH's dinging bleeping gagetry! It means he can be out turning compost bins like yesterday but still hear when a client has sent him an email and have a read of it out there without having to come in, otherwise he'd be sitting by the landline all day long unable to go out and do all the outdoor jobs that need doing. When you are freelance there are times when it is all or nothing where work is involved but still need to be available at the drop of a hat for when clients call, no matter what you are doing. Clients = money!

And just as an example of why mobiles are quite handy these days - whilst OH was turning compost bins I came inside and I have absolutely no recollection of this but I locked the back door (we keep the key in the lock during the day). He couldn't get back in because the front door also had the key in the lock, he shouted at the window where I was upstairs (here on the computer!) but I didn't hear (cos I'm deaf apparently  ). So he called the house phone, which I ignored of course cos they are always sales calls these days, and spoke on the a/phone so I would hear the little voice saying - LET ME IN!!! Ooops.

They say 'be careful what you wish for' but I'll be perfectly honest, I wish for (amongst many other things, which is a new thread entirely) a complete breakdown of the mobile phone service. Uninventions, anyone?

Thousands of people out and about are jabbering away, talking to no-one. When someone is walking behind me shouting into a phone, I get the strangest irritations down the back of me. I'm no luddite - I have a landline.

Besides which, no-one has yet provided good, solid evidence that holding a source of radiation to the side of one's head is an extremely good idea. :cooldude:

Quite so .... as a radio ham I have been subjecting my head to more than 2000 times the radiation I get from my mobile phone on a regular basis for 40 odd years and apart from having an arm growing out of my ear, I'm perfectly sort of maybe almost OK. :geek:

On the other hand, as I have no landline it would be strange that I can talk to Australia on my radio but not the emergency services if I were to break a leg out in the smallholding.

I think that gagetry has it's place but part of the problem with it is manners! The other day a lady came into the shop I work in - I was in the back at the time so followed her thru. She had her back to me so I spoke to her to let her know I was there - she turned and gave me a filthy look because I was interrupting her phone call!
I've also had customers have the phone glued to their ear having a conversation whilst I'm trying to help them with their purchases!
I find it really offensive - the service we offer is personal and individual and yet customers can behave so rudely! :angryfire:
Let us be lovely
And let us be kind
Let us be silly and free
It won't make us famous
It won't make us rich
But damn it how happy we'll be!
