Looks like christmas without the telly..................
Cos I'm just about to put my boot through it.
Look ,I do feel sorry for the people who are stuck in some airport cos it's a bit snowy, but for gods sake the BBC has spent hours banging on about it. They completly ignore the thousands of homeless who'd give a lot to swop,at best, some s--t hostel for a bench and free sandwiches at a warm Gatwick, and the hundreds of thousands on state pensions,or benefits, who sit in their homes with layers of clothing EVERY winter as they fear the constantly escalating price of oil, gas,LPG etc.
Sorry, this isn't exactly news, usually this passes me by like water of a ducks back, but they've just had some woman moaning that she'd had to spend the night at Gatwick while her family waited for a flight to Bali..............

Re: Looks like christmas without the telly..................
Hum....
I hope you feel a bit better for getting this out of your system.
You are quite right of course, as usual the great majority of people only think of their own little problems instead of seeing the real problems. It is even more upsetting when you think we are coming to Christmas and while it should be all about charitable actions, giving to others who really need it, it is all about me, me, me and how much money I can spend!....
What a sad old world!

Dear Sir
It's cheap broadcasting that fills much airspace to send one reporter to a closed airport and cheap radio to get the punters stuck on motorways to ring a phone in show and complain.
The cure for the problem is to return to less media broadcasting so that there is less airspace to fill.
Looking at the holiday schedules there is pap for the brain dead most of the time. I recommend either the radio which is free or a pile of books with a brief reference to the internet to see that the world is still there.
Yours without a telly long term
Flo

Hideous rant even by my standards,it was 5am ish,and I've not slept properly in days.....and I expect the people at the airport WERE having a lousy time,it's just that a vast section of the population in the UK seems to have practically no voice at all (a large proportion have no internet access),yet the BBC come over as the voice of the nation and really they're just another tabloid.

Re: Looks like christmas without the telly..................
dont worry its doing my head in too and i dont have a TV!!!
the thing that bugs me most - aside from the fact other people have worse problems than a missed flight - is its winter !
here in Britain we KNOW winter is going to be a bit hit and miss with regards to the weather, we KNOW from experience last year etc that flights DO get canceled that roads DO get blocked! that mail deliveries of xmas cards and presents most probably wont arrive until mid january no matter how much effort people put in to get them on time.
ohi do just wish they would shut up about how miserable it all is because they have to run away to where ever at xmas in order for it to feel 'special' at least this years xmas will be remembered!

Re: Looks like christmas without the telly..................
I do get your wider point about bbc coverage or lack of it and I agree with you. Also I've just done my online banking and Bali doesn't seem to be on the cards this Christmas. But there's something about transport delays that turns me into an attractive mix of Victor Meldrew and Verucca Salt. I absolutely deplore this trait in myself and I try not to give into it, especially when it's not the people on the station's or wherever's fault. However: I've never been confronted in that state by a friendly camera crew wanting to discuss my feelings. So if you ever turn on the tv at 5am and there's a wild-eyed woman standing going 'and I can't believe I've got to wait an extra 30 minutes for this train! And they didn't have a Guardian in the kiosk, I had to buy the Independent! And I can't believe this coffee's fairtrade!' it'll be me and yes I will now be cringeing.oldjerry wrote: Sorry, this isn't exactly news, usually this passes me by like water of a ducks back, but they've just had some woman moaning that she'd had to spend the night at Gatwick while her family waited for a flight to Bali..............

(Also when I saw your thread title I thought you meant literally, I came over to say, don't worry! there's nothing on! Isn't it crap though? I'm having to read books, shock horror

Re: Looks like christmas without the telly..................

Yes I thought the same as Susie - I mean how many times can they put Crocodile Dundee on at Xmas for goodness sake?
I haven't looked to see what's on beyond Boxing Day but we are getting out Season 7 of 24 to watch over the Xmas period. I've never seen such awful dross as they are putting on this year and I thought last year was bad enough!!!!

Re: Looks like christmas without the telly..................
Hey pbf I never realised what PB was until the end of season 6 of 24. Was watching the extra DVD which comes with it and started watching something which at first I thought 'this isn't 24'
then after a while I realised it was an episode of PB which I got quite into. I then googled it to see what it was about and now have the entire several series to watch!!! Maybe we'll start on that too over Xmas hee hee!

Re: Looks like christmas without the telly..................
The telly this xmas looks worse than ever - I can completely understand why people would wish to escape to Bali or similar!! My dad is currently at Gatwick waiting for a flight to the States to see my new baby niece, I know he's going to be gutted if he can't go, it's all he's talked about for the last 2 weeks so yeah there are many people with much bigger problems but I can completely understand why people are upset if they can't get to their families at this time of year.

Phew, glad that I still have 23 more episodes of Monarch of the Glen to get through. And the first series of the X Files.
Rolling news is a total curse. The Raol Moat coverage was the worst...or the couple of days between the election results this year and the formation of the coallition goverment, I will never forget the headlines about the fact that someone had seen a packed suitcase at the back door of number 10. Tsk...

Re: Looks like christmas without the telly..................
I might put the Steinbeck one on my list to read, that looks good and I've just finished On The Road so I'm into road trip books.oldjerry wrote:Me too...hmm I feel a new thread coming on......I'm reading: (novels only for Christmas)

This is going to sound pretentious, everyone grit your teeth. I'm trying to read my way through this list next year (not all of them, I don't read quite that quick). I thought if I followed a list it would introduce me to things I wouldn't otherwise have read. I'm on The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford at the moment and it's interesting but odd. I think my project will last as long as I can avoid Clarissa, Moby Dick and Don Quixote. I'm moving on to Kafka next

Hope your dad can get a plane, Shirleymouse!

I have a dreadful character flaw which leads to me liking Dornford Yates' novels, utter pap though they might be.oldjerry wrote:Me too...hmm I feel a new thread coming on......I'm reading: (novels only for Christmas)

I saw a dubbed report on French TV in which some awful woman stranded at Heathrow claimed that she was cold, hungry and frightened. The last one confused me a little. She was complaining that the staff wouldn't let her into the first class lounge. I think she was going to Bali. Perhaps it's something to do with the water.
