... turn an old caravan into a greenhouse?
... turn an old caravan into a greenhouse?
Hello
We have an ancient caravan on a piece of land we have recently purchased. We want to try to recycle it in some way and wonder if we can convert it into a greenhouse/polytunnel type thing. Our plan (so far) is to cut the walls and roof away, leaving about six inches of original structure all around each edge and corner, if you see what I mean. So we end up with a sort of caravan-shaped frame. Over this we would stretch heavy duty clear polythene, similar to the stuff used on polytunnels.
Anybody know why this would not work as a greenhouse? Would it all go mouldy and wet inside, do you think?
Or does anybody else have an idea of what to do with an old caravan? The chassis is too rusty to convert to a trailer.
Thanks for reading.

not sure but if you take all the clading off would you be left with a frame work to drape plastic over.
alternatively my first thought was to gut it and make it in to a rather plush chook house

If I were you I'd use it as a shed/store room.

Not sure about a caravan structure but somehow I think the frame might be too angular/sharp for putting polytunnel polythene over without considerable wrapping or covering in something like insulated tape. Also watering is going to be difficult - will rot the floor. Instant shed sounds like a better idea.
Re: ... turn an old caravan into a greenhouse?
Mmmm, good points from everybody. Hadn't thought about the floor rotting but yes, I can see how it might happen. The thing is, we have an old piggery on site, which is 132ft long and 30ft wide, so we pretty much have all the storage space we will ever need! That's why we are trying to think of something other than storage. Maybe I'll put it on freecycle or similar and see if anybody else can use it as a shed, but transporting it may be an issue...

I'd convert the piggery into the greenhouse and turn the caravan into a playhouse for the kids, an escape room for yourself of a shed for OH.
Our remote ancestors said to their mother Earth, "We are yours."
Modern humanity has said to Nature, "You are mine."
The Green Man has returned as the living face of the whole earth so that through his mouth we may say to the universe, "We are one."

Crap old caravans when batoned and clad can be completly disguised as a top qual shed for not too much money.
