War time recipes

You all seem to be such proficient chefs. Well here is a place to share some of that cooking knowledge. Or do you have a cooking problem? Ask away. Jams and chutneys go here too.

War time recipes

Post: # 214846Post oldfella »

A recipe from the war years, as served in the orphanage I spent some of my young days,

Cooking time 35/40 minutes

Quantity 4 helpings

Ingredients 6 oz wheatmeal flour
half a teaspoon of baking powder
1 oz sugar
4 oz finely grated raw beetroot
half oz of margarine

First mix flour and baking powder, rub in the margarine, then add sugar and grated beetroot.
Now mix all the ingredients to a soft cake consistency with 3 or 4 tablespoons of milk. Add a few drops of flavouring essence if you have it. Turn the mixture into a greased pie dish or tin and bake in a moderate oven for 35 minutes. This pudding tastes equally good hot or cold.
I can't do great things, so I do little things with love.

ooooohhh - I think there are some beetroot coming in my veg bag this week - guess what I'm going to make! Do you think I could add some cocoa powder and make it a chocolate beetroot pudding?

Sounds interesting. I keep meaning to try the chocolate beetroot cake - this looks easier for a kick off.

Don't see why not, but as cocoa was on ration I believe in those days, beetroot or for that matter anything else that could add a bit flavor, would have been used.

My friends and I went out for our, at least twice weekly exercise, walk today :angel4: and just happened to be walking in the general direction of a local tea room :angel12: where they serve cake made with root vegetables :angel8: We had a combination of beetroot and chocolate, orange, almond and sweet potato, and lemon and parsnip cakes. Excellent method for gaining at least one of your five a day!
