I can't add anything to what's already been said, there are some great ideas here. I do want to say how much I admire your attitude. You are having a go and setting a great example to the kids, brilliant.

Thanku all so very much for your suggestions. Old Jerry ur ideas top the bill and I will send you a wee pm to pick ur brains some more. Today I am making 8 dozen traybakes for a lady who needs them for an event tomorrow evening which is great as I love baking and its bringing in a few pennies!
With regards my other halfs skills, bless him he was a true towny till we met and after 13 yrs together I hav countryfied him!! He's the computer and delivery bod! Its me who can spend all today outside in all weathers but he is getting involved with making the vege garden at our local school so I'm hoping he will love it so much it might enthuse him to help out more outside at home!!! He's my rock and provides all the love and support that keeps me focussed.
I'm going to put some of my knitted stuff on etsy and see what happens. I knit for pleasure but if it brings in a few quid then that's a bonus.
You guys r amazing and ur support and advice means so much. I only wish I lived abit closer to u all. Take care. Xxx

Hi just thought I'd mention that you should get an appointment at the JCP and ask to be reffered to a provider who can help with self-employment. You tend to have to ask for these things, this comes with many benefits, obviously having a mentor to run ideas by, as well as sometimes having some extra funds for doing it as an incentive.
You can get up to £300 start up plus the JCP give you £40 per week for a year. You may also be entitled to Tax Credits to top you up while you're starting out.
There are rules of course, things like how long you have been claiming etc. But it really is worth doing, you also get a 4 week run on when you stop claiming.
I like the gardening idea, it is quite a seasonal job though, so perhaps you could come up with an extra plan for the winter. If you have a lot of land, what about selling your produce on a market stall or something like that. I know a couple that do well at the farmers market here.
I would recomend re-benefits, to find out how you can get the help before you simply stop claiming, also you can go to Business Link for advice.
GOOOOODDDDDD LUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK!!!!! :D

What's the JCP?
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

Mrs H, you enjoy knitting right? Well let me tell you, I've just discovered the joys of knitting with looms - ok, there's all different types out there & it's just about as easy or as difficult as you want it to be.

I've found that with a wooden loom, you can convert any needle pattern easily enough for the looms, but hang on, that's besides the point & not what I wanted to say....

THIS is just the right time of year to grab a set of circular looms & knock out some double quick xmas projects for the local xmas fayres out there.
I am making xmas gift bags, xmas sacks, xmas stockings, hats, scarves, socks..... Really all I'm doing is using a lot of white, red & green DK acrylic wool - but the hats are made within 2 hours, 2 hours for a xmas stocking, a little longer for a scarf, and all while you're watching TV at night

I've worked out that if I work extra hard for the next 4 weeks, I should have quite a groaning table's worth of knitted goodies in time for the local xmas fayre in the village
With a few cards & printed stickers on the bags, you can advertise anything else, maybe offers to do work to order - I was thinking of gift bags - made to order, any width, any length, for those awkward to wrap pressies & makes a lovely keepsake as well - decorated with knitted or crochet flowers, or over stitched with a name - anything!

I'll try &take a few pics later on to give you an idea of what I'm banging on about - and Argos do the loom sets, although they are cheaper on ebay too.

Also, if you can knock enough bits & bobs out for a couple of xmas fayres, you can always take along anything else - preserves, eggs, anything else that you make that can be sold - adverts for services, that sort of thing - it's all about getting out there & telling folks what it is that you can do.

Anyway, just a thought
The more people I meet, the more I like my garden
