Re: Good Life tribute
I just went through the channels here MMM, & the only 2 beeb channels that I have are BBC1 NI & BBC2 NI.
It's never really bothered me before because I was never a great beeb watcher anyway. Maybe I'll call the Sky bods & ask them why!

Re: Good Life tribute
If you have Sky Julie you can get all those channels I mentioned already, but you have to tune them in by hand.JulieSherris wrote:I just went through the channels here MMM, & the only 2 beeb channels that I have are BBC1 NI & BBC2 NI.
If you don't know how to do that then I could PM you with step by step instructions.
The only problem is you can't record them with Sky plus.

Yes it does, it's the BBC & ITV's solution to UK residents who can't get Freeview.oldjerry wrote:Tony ,does this work anywhere? OJ.Next time you go to the UK Julie, get yourself a Freesat box in Argos for £30.Odsox wrote:
You can then watch BBC1,2,3,4, ITV1,2,3,4, Channel 4,E4,More4, channel 5 etc, etc, for free, for ever.[/quote
All you need is a dish and a Freesat box.
The channels you get are here .. http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels

You can record anything that's on the EPG with Sky, but for stations that they don't want you to realise that you CAN get by tuning them in yourself, you can't record or get details of programs other that "now and next".
It's OK for people living in the UK, but not for us out in the colonies.

We have to resort to olde fashioned DVD or VHS.

Re: Good Life tribute
But why PAY for Sky when you can get it all for free now anyway??????? I used to pay years ago when I couldn't get any telly in English and way back before Sky it was BBC Prime and BBC World on a paying French equivalent, and BBC Prime was total rubbish.
They we got Sky but couldn't get any of the regular UK TV channels, had to watch things like Paramount Comedy all the time. Then gradually we started to get the Beeb and Channel 5 then finally the other two.
We also have another digibox enabling us to (finally!!) watch one channel whilst recording another and we can get most of the same channels on that too as on the no-subscription Sky box.
I can't see any reason to pay Sky money (and it's a lot of money
) unless you are seriously into Sport or the latest Movies. Which I'm not.

But that's the point, you CAN'T get them ALL for free, just the ones on that Freesat link that I posted.Millymollymandy wrote:But why PAY for Sky when you can get it all for free now anyway???????
I pay the bog standard minimum because it will allow me to get decent quality* Irish stations RTE1, RTE2, TG4 and channel 3, which although I pay the Irish TV licence these channels are not free on Sky.
Plus I like the SciFi channel (which they now call SyFy

* I don't mean the Irish channels are quality, but that the picture is not all snowy from a transmitter up country and I couldn't get TV3 anyway as my local transmitter doesn't carry it.

Re: Good Life tribute
I meant regular UK television stuff that people get there without digiboxes (well what they used to get before it all went digital). Plus a whole host of others - and every BBC and ITV region!
Who wants to watch all the rest of the 'Sky' rubbish anyway? All that UKTV Homes makeover stuff? If I want to watch rubbish I can still watch telly in Welsh, the GOD channel, Al Jazeera and even South African or Nigerian TV for free.
And I don't know how much you are paying but I was paying over £30 month including the movies then about £20 just for the bog standard package. So we got rid of it cos we could watch anything that we want to watch for free and had been paying subscriptions without even realising it!
What's Irish telly like anyway?

Mainly crap with the occasional good program.Millymollymandy wrote:What's Irish telly like anyway?
I do watch the Irish news every evening followed by the weather forecast, which is usually a lot more accurate than any other. Next time you watch any BBC weather forecast, just note where the forecaster is standing ... there bums are right where I live.

I certainly DO NOT watch any makeover shows, or I'm a celebrity something or other, or any reality show or any cooking program or any gardening program as I like to be entertained, not talked down to.
Cost wise, it's €19 and most importantly includes 15 or so HD channels.

Re: Good Life tribute
I tend to like the weather on Sky news in the morning, and although they don't 'do' Ireland, the maps are quite accurate.
As for daily viewing, well, I'm a Living/Syfy/Dave/Alibi/Hallmark/TV3 watcher, athough I quite often use it for radio as well because our radio reception here is horrendous.... Andy likes the movie & music channels and we also have the kids subs for Leah - who knows her channel numbers off by heart
I guess it's matter of whatever floats your boat!

Re: Good Life tribute
I can get Sky news and every radio station under the sun. Strangely enough we can get a Welsh speaking channel and Scottish Alba in Scots Gaelic but nothing from Ireland! Don't have a TV which can get HD cos our about 11 year old Sony just keeps on going and going so until it blows up we won't be moving into the modern world of flat screen TVs or high definitions or anything.
Um also how are you paying in euros for a Sky subsription Tony, given that you have to give a UK address and get someone there to pretend to be the person receiving it who pays the bills. Or is it legal for them to broadcast to Ireland?

Sky.ie MMM! Yep, we have Sky here tooMillymollymandy wrote:Um also how are you paying in euros for a Sky subsription Tony, given that you have to give a UK address and get someone there to pretend to be the person receiving it who pays the bills. Or is it legal for them to broadcast to Ireland?

And the nicest thing about it is that we don't have to have a phone line

Which means that we didn't mind the Sky subs as we don't have a monthly bill from eircom - I pay 13 or so euros for a 3month subs on Skype & that does our free calls to any european landline 24/7.
We also have Irish ads on some of the Sky channels too
