Proud as pucnh of the OH! -fishing

Post: # 212429Post dragonoak »

I'm so proud of my OH that I ust had to share this with you all. Two days ago he interupted me in the bath to show me this....

His first salmon,
His first double pounder,
His first fish on a spinner!

She topped the scales at 14.5 lbs. What a beautiful, elegant creature. I just had to share that with someone!!

Bl---Y H--L !! I've never had anything that size on rod and line in fresh water.( I'm afraid I'd probably have had to sell it).If you were fishing legit, where was it? ( dont worry all my fishing stuff, nets etc are packed away ,cos we're moving!).Anyhow well done,a great fish. OJ.

All 100% legit ^_^ The salmon take ends on the 1st november on the river Wear, as does the spinning with our local angling club, so he managed it with a week to spare. Needles to say he's off out again as I type... too cold for me though- got my woolies on and I'm staying like that till april xD

Going off asda's prices for their top-notch salmon, she would have cost £113.45 to buy whole....... not bad eh! Covered his permit costs for the year anyways :D We got 19 chunky steaks, a jam pan full of stock and a lovely chunk from the tail all sat nicely in the freezer.... NOM!!

What a bonus, tell you what, that permits cheap too. There area couple of top notch salmon waters very near here, all privately owned and out of bounds to the common man........Havent seen much here on fishing for food, what other fresh water stuff would you eat? I've tried roach, dace, chub( all ok if curried),Pike (really good, but the kids don't like the bones)perch(ditto)carp(which is what most people would seem to eat,but I wasn't impressed)....We used to take a lot of eels in a trap at a friends stream 4or 5 years ago,but nothing this last year, they've disappeared, shame they're really good eating.

Unfortunatly this year new laws have been implemented regarding the eels... they're now protected and you have to put them back. I managed to get a couple just before though, and yes I do agree, they're lovely! Prefere them fried though otherwise i find the too greasy. Brown and rainbow trout turn up a lt, not so many rainbows now though. Decent size on the brownies though, 1 fish can feed the 2 of us and a pan of stock for the puppies. We've also tried chub, but found it too be very boney, I have a 3lb one in the freezer as I have been meaning to ask if there is any nicer way of preparing and eating as I can't bare to throw it out. Curried chub you say, would you care to elaborate for me please?

As for trying anything else, well, we've got to catch it first lol! Would definatly try pike though :)

For the year our permit is about £120, and I get £30 off mine as I join a week after and the club is lovely enough to give me the spouses discount even though we're not married- I guess they need some more women members =]
